Week 9 : Smile for the Dildo Cam Honey!
The first doctor’s visit when you're pregnant is always kind of interesting. Usually, you’ve arrived at the doctor’s office after taking exactly 300 tests to confirm that yes, you are with child.
But the doctor? She doesn’t believe you. Yes, they make you take a test to prove that the sore boobies and acne aren’t because you are hitting puberty a little late in the game.
After asking the “when was the last time you had sex” questions, they say they are going to do an “ultrasound.” When they told me this, I imagined sitting in a warmly lit room, my husband holding my hand while the ultrasound wand glided over my belly.
Soft music would pipe in as I’d get my first glimpse at my baby, which would be fully formed (yes, at nine weeks) and waving “hello” to me.
Boy, was I wrong.
What you really get is the “Dildo Cam,” also known as the transvaginal ultrasound. It is a form of induction to “The Club.” For the next nine months, all things in your life will revolve around your vagina.
Never had the transvaginal ultrasound? For those of you awaiting your induction, basically, a tech gets a special camera and shoves it where the sun doesn’t shine. There is no soft music, no waving baby. All you get is a full bladder, a pillow shoved under your bottom and a tech that doesn’t even bother to buy you dinner first.

at my first appt, they actually didnt do an ultrasound, my doctor for some reason likes to wait untill the second appt to do the ultrasound and i will be 11 weeks, i asked if it would be the transvaginal or on the abdomen and my dr. said it will be a regular one on the abdomen

I also had one of those but I didnt have to have a full bladder so it wasnt that uncomfortable. But I do love the "dildo cam" theory.

I was unfortunate enough to experience the "dildo cam" before I was even pregnant to investigate possible ovarian cysts...
Well, after I got pregnant, a close friend of mine offered to give me an ultrasound at 16 weeks.. When she asked me if I'd be uncomfortable if she had to use the transvaginal, I told her she had to kiss me afterwards! hahaha I instantly thought of that when I read this!
Those things are so voilating!!

LMAO Soooo true! I had my ultrasound at my second appt. I made sure my husband could go along since it was our first ultrasound ever (our first baby). We get in the room, and next thing I know the nurse is telling me to undress just the bottom half...I thought ok, a little strange for just needing my belly, but ok. *shrugs* When she came back in and grabbed that damn "dildo" I thought oohhhh. LOL Cuz that is soooo what it looks like! Needless to say once things got started and I got to see my tiny little 8 wk old baby I didn't care how they were showing it to me! Watching their heartbeat is sooo awesome and almost humbling. Like, we made that happen?...Wow.

I never had to experiance that. I had my first ultrasound at 9weeks and he used one that went over the belly. I did see it in there though and I did ask what it was and I was VERY happy to have not had it done to me. Watch, next pregnancy I'll prolly be lucky enuff to have it....UGH!!

I had several transvaginal ultrasounds a week while going through fertility treatments so having one for the baby didn't surprise me. My husband, however, looked at the "wand" before the doctor came in and asked what it was. I wish I could have taken a picture of the look on his face when I told him what they would be doing with the wand. Hee hee.

Had that dildo cam through my last pregnancy, due to IVF treatments etc.Never liked it but hey I saw my twin angels. Now I am pregnant again , went last week and had that sucker again. My husband says its like a joy stick off those old video games. Uncomfortable but my Dr is a nice guy so you mostly concentrate on the little Angel growing inside. If thats how I have to see my baby then I will do it, not the most comfortable but what can you do , eh.

I had the same thing done last week. Also I went in thinking I would have the one on my belly, she did that so quick I thought it was over. Then she came in with the thingy put a bunch of KY goo on it and put it in. I was feeling a lil weird til she let me hear the heartbeat and I saw the baby at several different angles.

I had to go for a scan for infertility to check for nasties on my ovaries, full baldder for hours and she couldn't see a thing with the belly scan, she turned round and produced a huge, dildo and said go empty your bladder we'll do it the easy way!!!!!!!!!!!! easy way - for who!!!
It was the weirdest experience but also the greatest she found out i was six weeks pregnant - aparently we couldn't have children so we proved them wrong!!- ok i couldn't see much but i'm pregnant - who cares! I have another scan next week - i get to see the heartbeat - fingers crossed its a belly scan.

I (along with newly pregnant friends that I've asked) didn't get a pregnancy test at the doctor. I even jokingly asked, "So, Doc, am I knocked up?" And she told me that they don't test because they use the same kind of tests that we (patients) buy in the store.

I'm on my seventh pregnancy,four being miscarriages, so take this from a pro. All of these uncomfortable experiences that you are having now are just to prepare you for what the future holds. Although when "it's time", you won't care who is there or what they are doing to your body, just as long as they are trying to "get it out!!"
One word of advice, take the eperdural!! I had it with my last boy. His labor was like a walk in the park compared to my first!! I didn't feel a thing until it was time to push, and even that wasn't so bad. I took lots of demeral with the first one. It just made me feel drunk, but I still felt every pain.

I went through it too,but luckily I was prewarned my my health provider. To prove I was pregnant they took a urinalysis and a blood test. the vaginal ultrasound was not comfortable(this is my first, but my tech tried to be as genlte as possible. Now they don't do the full bladder thing (unless they are old-school) and at 9 weeks now my little baby is the size of a cherry and has its little handseez and feetseez and I sawtehm move. I was TERRIFIED at first, but now I am excited. And go on walks or if you work out keep working out. It is great for you and your baby and will keep your edema(mainly the swelling you may get in your legs the 3 tri)down to a minimum or you may not get it at all.

LMAO. Dildo cam is right. My husband was there with me and he wiggled his eyebrows at me like it was sexy. I rolled my eyes so hard I think I may have bruised them. This is my 3rd pregnancy, but the 2nd was ectopic. So far this one is healthy and yet I've had about 3 run-ins with the dildo cam thus far. I figure, as long as it's healthy, who cares what they have to do to me?

Ok soo Im young and Im new at this "pregnancy thing". I went in for my first app. and I too thought I would have the belly wand just like in the movies. But boy was I wrong. she made me lay down and then I began to feel pressure between my legs. It was one of the most uncofortable things I have been thro with this pregnancy.

At least u got an ultrasound....my doctor is making me wait until week 20! I am 9 weeks and still havent gotten a chance to hear my babys heartbeat......Doc is making me wait until week 13! So basically I wont get to see my baby or even know if it has a beating heart until my second trimester...I think that really sucks!

i work in a hospital with all OB docs and i must say....the first time i saw that thing i was scared and they werent even using it on me....so when i came time for me to get mine i already knew what to expect.....but my husband on the other hand had no idea.....i told him the night before he would be with me when i had my "DATE" with the ultrasound machine.....boy was he surprised when he figured that out....

Obviously, not everyone needs this. It is only for when the fetus/embryo is very tiny (like 9 weeks). If your first ultasound isn't until 12 weeks, you're going to have to look elsewhere for a thrill!

LOL, I read this a week after having my scan. At the time I didn't see it as funny, we had suffered some bleeding the day before and I was terrified I had lost my longed for little peanut. I was very teary and didn't even click when they asked me to take off my lower garments. I thought the very nice looking young man would leave the room, however, he locked the door and asked me to climb onto the bed. When he waved 'dildo cam' I looked at my hubbies face, which said it all. After finding out peanut was still there I gave a sigh of relief then nearly fell off the table laughing my aching boobs off at dildo cam. Not a pleasant experience but worth it to know peanut was still there.
Ok, the one thing I've noticed about the above is that there's no men posting on here. So here's hubby to fill you all in on what this is like for the bloke in the relationship.
We have the appointment early-ish in the morning, and with Amanda having spent the whole of the previous day distraught with worry, what else could I do but have a few (or more... Hey, I'm a bloke!) beers the evening before. She wants a baby so bad, I worried what may transpire if she had indeed lost it. So anyway, we turned up, me expecting the tummy job. Ohhhhhhh, no. In we went, she laid down, me still feeling a bit rough(ish). Me holding her hand etc. Now you all must understand that I KNEW that all was OK and there was nothing to worry about, our 'relations' previous had brought on a 'very strong' reaction in her I'd never felt before... (I don't want to get 'inappropriate' but that's why she bled...a lesson for you first timers out there...).
So she's lying there, terrified for the baby, and I spot this very phallic-shaped item and I ain't no shrinking violet, I knew where that bad boy was going. Oh, yes. Even if there were two of them in a blur(not quite true, lol). It was a female and a male in the room, the female asked Amanda to undress, she did so behind the curtain, expecting the (she called him a rather attractive young) chap to exit stage left before she came out. No. He sat down at the machine and asked her to lie down! I had a feeling this was coming as I'd noticed his ID badge, and he was something to do with babies. Amanda looked at me, and I couldn't tell her what I thought was coming for wanting to laugh. Of course, it wasn't the time or the place to laugh, so I just held her hand. Up it went. With a few comical facial expressions I'll never forget...
Long and the short of it was, I never took my eyes off the screen, and I could see a heartbeat. Amanda couldn't bear to look, so when he mentioned about some feature on the screen, all she could ask was 'is it still there, then?'. Yes, it was, and we've been happy and excited ever since. How much can a pram cost??????

With my first pregnancy I knew exactly when I got preggo so I didn't have an ultrasound done and was sad about it. This time I was so excited to have the first ultrasound... that is until they pulled out the "dildo cam"... who's idea was this? Couldn't have been a woman who was 8 weeks pregnant, that's for sure! Wow I just went through this yesterday the told me I was going to have my first ultrasound I was so excited my fiance couldn't wait to see what he had helped create when I walked into the room so goes empty your bladder and undress from the waist down ??????? I was so confused then I see the wand I look at my fiance and he looked at me and yeah the condom thing was all to weird on top of all this but we did get to see the little booger so it was all worth it...

I love the dildo cam reference. That was exactly what I thought. I've been pg before but m/c. But then, I didn't get my first ultrasound until I was about 12-13 weeks, so I had a normal one. This time, the nurse did one at 8 weeks. I was expecting the same treatment, but then I saw the....thing. I actually got nervous, cause I thought that appointment was supposed to have a "happy ending" or something. Luckily the nurse noticed I was uncomfortable and explained everything to me. Still very hard to be comfortable when that thing looked like it belonged in my bottom drawer.

I actually found out i was pregnant from an ultrasound!! My gyno wanted me checked for endometrosis - well, that's what she told me! We got really good pictures from my abdominal scan that i didn't need to have the "dildo cam" - thank goodness. I was 7 1/2 weeks and we could see the heart beat and all - it was fantastic!
Now i'm 13 weeks and getting very impatient for another ultrasound - i guess i was spoilt seeing the baby so early on.

It's not that bad, everyone chill out!! My doctor explained that they use the "dido cam" early on becasue they can get much better pictures earlier in the pregnancy. It doesn't hurt and is worse than having a pap smear. Think about what has to come out in 7 months. A thin camera is a piece of cake! It's all relative!! You get to see you baby early on!!!

HAHAHA, I had my first U/S at 9 weeks, and I can totally relate. The best part was when the U/S tech unrolled a *condom* over the wand. My husband and I couldn't keep a straight face; we were just like sixth graders in there. I told the tech it looked like a dildo cam, and she agreed. Well, the joking probably relaxed me, because it wasn't too uncomfortable. And it was all worth it to see the little one and hear its heartbeat.

Is this the truth or what?? Condom? You lucky ladies...with my first baby I had a purple glove over my diddly dildo cam so there was all kinds of extra latex to squeeze up there. Yikes! I am just so excited to go in for my first appointment this time...
The bonus? My husband is now ever so sympathetic when I have my annuals!
And, yes, it's true. The pregnancy is a vagina-fest. Ugh. Quite the humbling experience.

loved what you guys all had to say i was laughing my ass off.. don't take it the wrong way i have a 9yr old so i know the whole dildo cam thing. and i have had several other pregnancies after that, but my question to anyone who might have an answer to is this. you walk into the dr apt for blood work for a hystorectomy because of endomitriosis and they come back with a positive prego test. they work you up mentally and do a physical and estemate(GOTTA LOVE THAT ONE) a due date. go back a week and a half later they have you pee in that stupid cup and run a test that said negative this time. you tell the DR> they never worked before why would they work now. so he requests or atleast said he did another blood test quess what that comes back negative. my body still shows all the signs of being pregnate and i have had people say i either have cancer or a baby in there....so its the case of the diapearing baby. well to the doctors anyways. has anyone ever been in this type of situation that you just know you are no matter what the dr says or have any ideas on what to do with the dr. and pregnancy while looking for a new obgyn???

Yep!! That was exactly like it happens. The Vaginal Ultrasound was a shock we were really not expecting it at all. The doctor said here is a blanket and undress from the waste down. Me being a little confused at this point!! errr, a transvaginal ultrasound requires an EMPTY bladder... one of the reasons i prefer them to the traditional belly kind. nothing is worse than having a full bladder and someone pushing on it! on the other hand, the "dildo" is simply eased in gently... not a big deal at all.

Im so sorry!! HAHA Your bladder was supposed to be completely empty....Im a sonographer, and a full bladder causes artifacts on a transvaginal ultrasound....not to mention (no need to tell YOU this!! :)) but needless suffering of having the "dildo cam" shoved in you with a full bladder. My daughter just turned 1 in April so it has been nearly 2 years since my first ultrasound and this still made me laugh until I cried. My daughter was my first and I had no idea that was how they did your first ultrasound until my tech just lub it up and popped it in. Needless to say I was beyond shocked. I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks and I had a regular ultrasound... not the dildo kind... and (although I had to pee) it wasn't bad - no pillows, etc... so why do they need the internal ultrasound?? We saw our baby easily and found the heartbeat very easily...

It's not that bad at all. You guys must have had experiences with it. I am on number 2 my first pregnancy was risky so i was at the doctors every week for 9 months. and every week i had that done. my doctor is really nice though. so i think that makes a big difference on your comfortable factor.

Well, I got one this past week, And honestly, Its not that bad at all. You just have to relax, By the way once you see the baby. Which is the size of a small peanut, your mind goes elsewhere, and you actually enjoy the experience. Atleast I did. Its not painful at all. You just have to lay back and relax, cause if you don't then yes, It could be very uncomfortable. (oH, And it is like a dildo cam though)

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! I felt the same way when I went for my first doctor's appointment. I was expecting a little wand to go over my belly and show me my baby. Having to put my legs in sitrrups and have what resembled a pap smear was not what I had in mind. My husband turned to me and said so this is what you have to go through every month. I thought I was the only one that felt a little violated. You watch as the tech holds up the "dildo" and "lovingly" places a condom on the cam. Is this so I dont get pregnant??? To late hehe.. Huh? Must be an OB/GYN thing, because you don't get this experience with midwives. LOL No "300 tests" to see if you're really pregnant (none, actually, unless you count the routine first-trimester bloodwork, but that's to determine a variety of things, none of which are simply "pregnant or not"). And there's absolutely no reason to put you through the humiliation of a transvaginal ultrasound without warrant. The only one I've ever had was after some early bleeding with my first pregnancy. Of course, I'm sure the few hundred dollars they get to charge your insurance company -- assuming, of course, you're not paying out of pocket (in which case TURN THIS DOWN!!! LOL -- is enough incentive for any doctor. Glad I use midwives!

omg so funny!!! i have had it done 3 times. once to see what was wrong (fibroids) and twice to see the baby. those who are worried: calm down. they give the option of insertion, u or them. it doesnt hurt...just uncomfortable. hubby gets sent in after its in there. Whoever said it wasnt worth it...how is it not worth seeing ur child!!! i went in at 5 weeks (they thought i was further) and saw just a sac or big blob as i called it. then we went in again at 7 and omg a heartbeat!!! we go next week for i think another and i cant wait!!! i think this time ill have the on top one though. anyways...my husband was in there when nurse took the thing out and set it in the sink so i could get dressed. lol i came out and he was standing by the sink and he just said....so u replacing me now??? lmao. no baby...it doesnt have fingers or a tongue!!! lmao

Don't forget the fact that you only get to see a little white splotch on a black screen where they have to actually identify the head, the adomen...because it doesn't appear to look like a real baby, at all. They get to keep all of the good pictures, a whole strip of them, while sending you home with the 2 lamest shots of what's supposed to be you baby but appears to be more of a cloud in the night sky.

For my first pregnancy I was only six weeks when I found out and they used the normal ultrasound on your belly. I think also for the second and maybe third. But with this baby (my fourth) they used the transvaginal. I don't know why. It was a big shock. I was thinking maybe cause I gained a lot of weight and maybe I had to much tummy for the tummy scan to penetrate. LOL I don't know. But they started doing it and it felt so uncomfortable and they told me that my bladder was too full to go empty it. So I had to have it inserted twice. How fun...

Well, after 5 yrs. of nothing, my husand and I gave up on buy pregnany test... well atleast until about 3 1/2 weeks ago when we found out that we were 6 weeks along. I personally prefer the transvaginal ultrasound to the regular abdominal ultrasound. I dont have to have a full bladder to have a transvaginal ultrasound done. It seems they have an easier time getting a clearer picture as well. Just my opinion.

I went in for my first ultrasound when I was 14 weeks pregnant with my son. I was told it was a boy and never had to endure the "dildo cam" at all. I just went in last week with my new baby. I was almost 9 weeks and was lucky enough to avoid it again. I am sorry for those who have had it. My sister had to go through it for cysts and said it was the worst thing she had ever experienced. I had 2 do that w/ my 1st baby at 7 weeks! I was sitting in there waiting for the doc & saw the little condom things. I'm thinking "what the heck are those for!!??" Talk about uncomfortable but my doc was crazy funny so that helped a little.

I hope I never have to have one!! That sounds horrible. I have an appointment on Feb. 5 and hopefully I won't have to go though that. I like the belly ones. With my other 2 kids this was never even mentioned. I actually found out about it on this site. Imagine my surprise. I already hate the pap exam the most, but this would be right up there. On January 14 2008 I had my first appointment at 8 weeks and needless to say I was not totally satisfied. My midwife is great and I am excited to work with her. I really wanted to get an early ultrasound so I could see what was there even though I know it's not much this early,now at 9 weeks, but my sister had went with me to see the joyous event and we didnt even get the ultrasound. I am happy and feel blessed that so far everything is checking out okay so I can be happy with that for now. I feared a tubal pregnancy so when she said my uterus was growing I was estatic!! lol!! i am 10 weeks and i had my first ultrasound today..and it was a dildo cam...lol..it wasnt as bad as i though..but it wasnt fun either..also i am having identical twins too!!..wow!

Well I am really glad I read about this because I never heard of a dildo cam in my life and I wont get my ultrasound done until 13 weeks and I can't wait but now I don't know if I wont my women Dr doing that to me. I just can't believe that they use that I thought it was the one on the belly oh well anyway i get to see my baby I will take it. Thanks for discussing this subject it was helpful.

aww someone else who knows my pain but alas my story gets better.. after a few careful calls i had decided on a good doctor relatively well known in the community and well received being that i come from a big family i didnt think much of this til it came time for the glorious dildo moment when none other than my lovely cousin comes in since she had just got her degree and was hired on immediately.. lucky me i was her first "dildo" victim.. still not sure who was more embrassed

HA HA, I had my first "dildo cam" experience at 7 weeks during a little trip to the ER. As I am somewhat young at 22 (but looking around the age of 17), the nurse felt as if she needed to explain everything to me and just about how much of this "crazy thing" she was inserting. I appreciated her step by step explanation, but since I'm here, we both know that I'm not a virgin and that stickin about 4 inches of a dildo looking contraption into my vagina isn't something that is totally new for me, just a different form of object this time! lol
Also, I'd like to state that Tawny (comment #38) stated that. "Obviously, not everyone needs this, its only when the fetus is young." Just like to point out thats not true. My uterus is tilted and pushed towards my lower back. You cant even see my baby when they do a normal belly ultra sound...so thank goodness for this "dildo cam"..its the only reason I get to see/hear my babies heartbeat during my appointments.

This was funny as I just got my second "dildo cam" today. It's not too bad though b/c my tech let me "guide" it in and I think it only goes up about 2 inches...it didn't feel like it was "invading" to badly. And the butt pillow does help! I was also covered with one of those paper blanket things over my lap and my husband did just fine and just stared at the screen. You can see so much more, too! We're at 9 weeks today!

Ha ha! Exactly how i felt....Luckily (or not so lucky) i have had one of those before due to my cycts. And i thought...no more of that thing...and then i went for my 2st appointment. I saw the condom and thought...oh no! WILL IT NOT GO AWAY??
When we went to hear the heartbeat, again the wretched thing. It was so sore cause he moves it around so hubby can get a good look...i was like. Ok we heard the heartbeat, now get it out!!!

I had the "special" ultrasound with my first pregnancy. But this time around I got a standard one at 6 wks since they didn't know how far along I was.

I live overseas and got the dildo cam for my regular pelvic exam. My doctor even showed me where the embryo implants in the uterus. Nothing showed up. The joke was on us because the next week I went back because I thought I was pregnant, and sure enough, hello embryo!

Wow!! I must be a weirdo because my "Dildo Cam" experience was fine. I am at 9 weeks and I felt no discomfort, my bladder was empty and I saw my little one "waving" at me. The tech who did mine was nice and friendly. Maybe I lucked up with this one!! But it did make me think twice when I saw it though. I, like everyone else, was expecting the belly ultrasound but to find out that something was going in "there" was a little daunting.
