Week 32 : Of all the nerve!

There’s a byproduct at the end of pregnancy that many women do not know about: sciatic nerve pain.

Your sciatic nerve is one really big nerve that goes from your butt down to your ankle. If you’re pregnant and feel a little nerve pain anywhere from your bottom all the way down your leg, congrats, that is your sciatic nerve going off.

For some reason I’ll never exactly understand, I decided to go to the mega-store IKEA while nearing the end of my second pregnancy. I was heavily pregnant, carrying a monster baby in my belly and decided to browse futons and twin beds along with the rest of my city.

By the time I left IKEA, I could not walk. To make a long story short, I would not walk “normally” again until three weeks after my baby was born. Basically, my child was laying in an odd position and was pressing on my nerve.

I tried everything: ice, heat, rubbing, stretching, laying on the opposite side. Nothing worked. It got to the point where I could not walk to the bathroom without wanting to collapse in tears.

The highlight of this experience would be heading to the local Target store to buy a few needed items. Normally, I’d stay in the car with my nerve pain, but I was bored and wanted out.

I made it about halfway through the store before it happened: I couldn’t take one more step. I was already huge, which drew enough attention as it was. Add in the fact that I had a major limp and sort of drug my leg behind me, and I was a walking circus act.

Women would come up to me and offer their condolences. “How much longer?” they’d ask. They’d always have a look of sadness when I told them the number of weeks left.

“You poor thing,” they’d mutter before walking off.

My husband finally came to my rescue and made me climb aboard the shopping cart, my big belly facing outwards, performing its own version of Titanic’s “I’m the king of the world!”

I’m pretty sure everyone steered clear of our cart, with my belly pointing out as one heck of a hood ornament on the end.

ok i feel so stupid for this but here is what happened.... my leg went numb yes NUMB for 2 hours & i couldnt sleep so i called my bf while he was at work (he is a deputy) and he asked his nurses what it was.... they said go to the er.... the on call dr said go to the er... so what do we do? go to the er. They do and ultrasound of my leg, 'nothing is wrong' ummmmm my leg has been numb for about 5 hours now something is wrong! turns out you can have sciatic nerve pain as early as you gain weight.. woo for me.. would have been helpful to know BEFORE my leg went numb. so for the past week i have been limping around like an injured dog... my capt just looks at me like im crazy, apparently prego women dont have 'leg pains'.... grumble grumble

lol Ive been having a horrible week with GD and high blood pressure and the visual aids with this article just made my day. I love the 'hood ornament' comment :) I've been feeling the butt pain off and on for a while though. It hit me while I was in Fred Meyer the other day. I just had to stand there leaning on my cart while I curved my hip upward to let my leg kinda just dangle an inch or so off the ground. It felt good to let gravity do its natural stretching process. It seemed to help a little.

i hate to say it, but im thankful im not the only one going threw it!!!
i could not figure out what that pain in my *butt* (literally) was. i havnt had it in my leg, just my left butt cheek :(
its a bit embarassing, limping around, and having people stare at you.

i hate it when, one minute your walking perfectly fine, then out of nowhere, it hits. i have had many occasions where i have fallen over in pain.
i wish there was something out there to relieve that horrible pain.

I knew absolutely nothing about the nerve previous to reading this article. When I tell my husband, I'm sure he'll let loose a big sigh of relief - He's been thinking it's his fault, making me get up and walk around too much.
Besides, it's really hard to explain to someone how "There's this pokey feeling in my rear and it's making my ankle hurt." x_x;

Its a BIG deal to try to make it into the store, let alone actually complete my shopping trip. I am trying to work up until my 39th week. Wow, what we do for our little bundles of joy, huh? The pain started when I was about 28 weeks, now within the last week, I am at 32 weeks, the pain has decreased a bit. Maybe the baby moved position. I have been doing a lot of pelvic tilts, and exercises on the birthing ball (stability ball) and this hass helped a great deal. I do them every morning I do when I wake up and it really has been helping.

Even my doc said it was just the pregnancy, but I know better. I can't walk, the pain makes me wanna cry, this is not normal. Changing positions in bed is impossible without the pain, getting out of bed is even worse. I am now finally in Physical Therapy, but can't really seem to solve the problem the pain just lingers. I even had to miss work because of it. My job requires a lot of sitting, even driving is difficult, it hurst when I push on the gas pedal. I too don't like to go anywhere too often because of the difficulties getting around, but then again I'm tired of staying home. If I sit too long it hurts, if I'm active too long it hurts. Can't seem to win.

I sympathise with all of you as I suffer from sciatic pain being in my 31 week. I am due to have a scheduled ceasearan in 6 weeks and have another type of pain on my left side that seems worse than the sciatic pain (if that is possible). I was admitted for tests recently as my midwife thought it was my appendix but in the end I was told I had adhesions from a previous myomectomy I had in 2004. Apparently it is a build up of scar tissue on my womb from the surgery that doesn't stretch as the baby grows. I had never heard of it before and had not been warned of it's possibility by my surgeon. Unfortunately normal painkillers don't work and with 6 weeks to go and having to work it is a nightmare situation for me. Does anyone else have these symptoms and how have they dealt with the pain. This is my first pregnancy to have come this far and I had wanted 3 kids... does this pain go away... Have a safe delivery all of you.

I read all 32 comments and I must say, boy am I glad there are pregnant ladies out there that feel the pain too!! I swore I was the only one who felt "psychotic" pain! I too have tried every home remedy that my doc recommended. But nothing has worked. Only thing left is to take drugs to numb the pain! Of course I can't do that! I'm now 31 weeks and 3days. The worst of this pain has been in the last 3 weeks. At first it was on my right side and now its moved to my left side and like I said the worst feeling of all! Like some of you have said, sometimes you're ok and then the next few minutes your in agony! I hate it because I can't seem to do anything around the house! I'm even a stay at home mom, simple chores seem almost impossible to do. I feel so helpless! I'm so glad that my 5yr old daughter is actually really helpful. When I couldn't walk, she's right there to lend me her shoulder, but being only 5, she can't do much in holding my weight. It just makes me smile tho when she tries. What's really funny and not so funny at the same time is that my husband almost feels my pain. He really is having sympathy pregnancy. So sometimes he isn't of much help to me, especially when he's feeling nauseous and pain! I really wish there is something out there to relieve the pain. More than just the typical physical therapy, stretches, yoga, exercise, hot/cold packs, tylenol, etc... Gotta invent something for those of us women who have done everything and still can't get rid of the pain. I feel for those women especially that have to go to work. I can not imagine myself going to work in the situation I'm in. Thanks to all for your written comments and support. Wish everyone a well pregnancy!

With my first it was the worst, Doc gave me tylonol with codine so I could sleep, I don't know how many positions I tried just for a good hour of sleep. I had to keep flipping over to the other side each hour because the pain would wake me up about that often. 2nd boy, my hip gave out for an entire day, doc said go to a physical therapist, and couldn't get in. So Doc told me have hubby rub it out for me. "Hubby will you rub my butt" haha, that was the funniest thing to ask but it worked, I could walk. I am 32 wks now and doing ok this time.

He,He,He. I am 32 weeks pregnant with my second and almost got a handcap sticker for my car at work because one of the guys saw me try to walk to my car and not make it. I found myself standing in the middle of two lanes on one leg waiting to be able to put pressure on the other again. This was after my hip gave out already about 15 times that day at work. I am lucky I didn't bust my lip open. But it was gone the next day and it comes back off and on. I'll be walking and my hip will no longer be there! This happens alot at night and I found that hopping on one foot is a very effective way to get to the bathroom anyway. So I too know the pain you are going through. I just hate how I can't tell when it is going to happen. I'll be fine then just simply can't walk for a few minutes....then fine again. Or it could be an all day thing. But it's almost over! Hang in there!

I'm in my 32nd week of pregnancy and have only gained roughly 20 pounds which is normal so I would like to think I'm not a complete blimp like peoples "glances" make me out to be.

It helps hold your belly up and my back felt better right away. I put it on FIRST thing when I get up and it is the last thing I take off. That is the key. Were it all day every day. It really made a difference in how I felt after getting ready. It is not such a job and I accually feel like going somewhere when I finish. I would recomend it to everyone it really changed my live.

I know - This type of pain and the spasms are very isolating and emotionally straining. More women should get talk about it, more research done on it as it is NOT a normal part of pregnancy or incurable. I was diagnosed with "sciatica" at 7 months, had to leave work and still can't return. When I went to physical therapy I found out my hip was out of alignment, my side and bottom tendons/ muscles (iliotibial bands and gluteus muscles?) were too tight and my pelvic muscles were straining to hold together under the excess weight, thus pressing on some nerves and going into spasms. They got me better enough so I can walk about the house or the store on most good days, so long as I rest, sit, lie down the rest of the day. The key is to get good physical therapy, don't do things that hurt, and get rest. It's not true sciatica, however - it's called "pelvic girdle pain" or "symphsis pubis dysfunction". Look it up! And don't give up.

At 5 mos I had to ride in the electric chairs to shop. I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes at a time with out being in agony. At 7 mos It had completely subsided. I don't know if the baby was just in the right position at 5 mos or what! You would think it more likely to be happening now. All I get is numbness. No complaints!

Boy can I sympathize. I had "psychotic" nerve pain with my firstborn and when I read about your leg dragging behind, I had to laugh. I think your blogs are hysterical.
