There’s a byproduct at the end of pregnancy that many women do not know about: sciatic nerve pain.
Your sciatic nerve is one really big nerve that goes from your butt down to your ankle. If you’re pregnant and feel a little nerve pain anywhere from your bottom all the way down your leg, congrats, that is your sciatic nerve going off.
For some reason I’ll never exactly understand, I decided to go to the mega-store IKEA while nearing the end of my second pregnancy. I was heavily pregnant, carrying a monster baby in my belly and decided to browse futons and twin beds along with the rest of my city.
By the time I left IKEA, I could not walk. To make a long story short, I would not walk “normally” again until three weeks after my baby was born. Basically, my child was laying in an odd position and was pressing on my nerve.
I tried everything: ice, heat, rubbing, stretching, laying on the opposite side. Nothing worked. It got to the point where I could not walk to the bathroom without wanting to collapse in tears.
The highlight of this experience would be heading to the local Target store to buy a few needed items. Normally, I’d stay in the car with my nerve pain, but I was bored and wanted out.
I made it about halfway through the store before it happened: I couldn’t take one more step. I was already huge, which drew enough attention as it was. Add in the fact that I had a major limp and sort of drug my leg behind me, and I was a walking circus act.
Women would come up to me and offer their condolences. “How much longer?” they’d ask. They’d always have a look of sadness when I told them the number of weeks left.
“You poor thing,” they’d mutter before walking off.
My husband finally came to my rescue and made me climb aboard the shopping cart, my big belly facing outwards, performing its own version of Titanic’s “I’m the king of the world!”
I’m pretty sure everyone steered clear of our cart, with my belly pointing out as one heck of a hood ornament on the end.

i could not figure out what that pain in my *butt* (literally) was. i havnt had it in my leg, just my left butt cheek :(
its a bit embarassing, limping around, and having people stare at you.
i hate it when, one minute your walking perfectly fine, then out of nowhere, it hits. i have had many occasions where i have fallen over in pain.
i wish there was something out there to relieve that horrible pain.
i cant sleep cant walk i crawl up the stairs in my house... but yet i must still go work on my feet. I do the exaggerated limp while i serve my customers. owwweee
32 weeks today due Jan 10th
Besides, it's really hard to explain to someone how "There's this pokey feeling in my rear and it's making my ankle hurt." x_x;
I laughed out loud til I ahd tears streaming on this one. I can totally relate. I can barley walk down the hallway in my house due to my little on literally sitting low on my sacrum ALL THE TIME! it's the most mind numbing pain I have felt and it's in spurts. I doesn't help that I am small and when I'm bent over in pain.. people ask what's wrong and all I can do is point to my little belly and they make that "OOOh" face and say they had no clue.
Thank you for writing this. I cried from laughing so hard!! I have been trying to explain to my husband why I am in so much pain but I think your story finally got the point across.
I know your pain, Lord knows I do. MY second child sat on my nerve for about four days. I thought I was going to die! I had previously injured my sciatic nerve and had been told by my doctor that once its injured, it never really quite recovers. I mean it was a bad scene for me and anybody who was near me during that time. Now that I am on my third child and have entered my third trimester, I am mentally preparing myself for the pain. Lord, Lord.
this is hilarious!!!!!!!!!
you know it is so great to hear about the pain coming from someone who has actually felt it, because having people tell me it will go away or it cant be that bad...when i cant even roll to my opposite side in bed or walk to the bathroom :(... was just not helping. this is my first baby and that was quite the experience...I'm so excited for labor...bring it on...mostly thanks I feel much better about my groans and complaints.
I just started getting the sciatic pain at my 32nd week. I relly feel for you, although it helps to know other people have been in the same boat...
I feel so sorry for you all. I have never had that problem with my previous pregnancies but I'm beginning to wonder if I won't with this one. My hip hurts at times and I won't even be able to move. Good luck to everyone. God Bless. I wish you all the best. I love the article.
Wow, I can totally relate! I have been having the same problem. I feel like I limp around like I am about 80 years old. I literally "limp" everywhere I go, and yes, get the same odd stares. Its a BIG deal to try to make it into the store, let alone actually complete my shopping trip. I am trying to work up until my 39th week. Wow, what we do for our little bundles of joy, huh? The pain started when I was about 28 weeks, now within the last week, I am at 32 weeks, the pain has decreased a bit. Maybe the baby moved position. I have been doing a lot of pelvic tilts, and exercises on the birthing ball (stability ball) and this hass helped a great deal. I do them every morning I do when I wake up and it really has been helping.
I know exactly what you're talking about... Except when it happens it goes away after awhile... I love how you kept it on the funny side... I've noticed that when I bend over too much to pick stuff off the floor or start my vaccum my back hurts so badly later I can't sit on the toilet with out hollaring in pain!
gee, i wish my fiance would do all the things listed above (the nice ones). he just thinks i use pregnancy as an excuse sometimes. i would really like to see a man waddling around a store holding their back, or stoping to hold on to something because their feet hurt. gosh, men sometimes.
I know exactly what you're going thru. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and going on my 2nd week of sciatic pain in the behind. People just don't understand. Even my doc said it was just the pregnancy, but I know better. I can't walk, the pain makes me wanna cry, this is not normal. Changing positions in bed is impossible without the pain, getting out of bed is even worse. I am now finally in Physical Therapy, but can't really seem to solve the problem the pain just lingers. I even had to miss work because of it. My job requires a lot of sitting, even driving is difficult, it hurst when I push on the gas pedal. I too don't like to go anywhere too often because of the difficulties getting around, but then again I'm tired of staying home. If I sit too long it hurts, if I'm active too long it hurts. Can't seem to win.
percocet!!! thats what they gave me , i had the same thing happn yesterday ,i stand all day , i'm 32 wks working full time open to close shifts at radioshack , i collapsed , pain spasms shot to my back and lower abdomen, i thought i was in labor, (first time mother mind you)
I can totally understand.
My sciatic nerve is absolutely killing me!! I have a herniated disc in my lower back so that combined with baby is really fun, let me tell you. I also feel for you when you said that you could no longer walk. I feel like that everyday by about 6:00pm. However, only 6-8 weeks left. Can't wait!!!!!!!!
I sympathise with all of you as I suffer from sciatic pain being in my 31 week. I am due to have a scheduled ceasearan in 6 weeks and have another type of pain on my left side that seems worse than the sciatic pain (if that is possible). I was admitted for tests recently as my midwife thought it was my appendix but in the end I was told I had adhesions from a previous myomectomy I had in 2004. Apparently it is a build up of scar tissue on my womb from the surgery that doesn't stretch as the baby grows. I had never heard of it before and had not been warned of it's possibility by my surgeon. Unfortunately normal painkillers don't work and with 6 weeks to go and having to work it is a nightmare situation for me. Does anyone else have these symptoms and how have they dealt with the pain. This is my first pregnancy to have come this far and I had wanted 3 kids... does this pain go away... Have a safe delivery all of you.
Its not funny but I had to laugh when I was pregnant with my first son I was at the mall and after a long day of working and shopping it happened and I was stuck in the middle of the mall I couldn't move my legs. Finally a lady helped me to a bench and I had to call my husband to help me out to the car.
I read all 32 comments and I must say, boy am I glad there are pregnant ladies out there that feel the pain too!! I swore I was the only one who felt "psychotic" pain! I too have tried every home remedy that my doc recommended. But nothing has worked. Only thing left is to take drugs to numb the pain! Of course I can't do that! I'm now 31 weeks and 3days. The worst of this pain has been in the last 3 weeks. At first it was on my right side and now its moved to my left side and like I said the worst feeling of all! Like some of you have said, sometimes you're ok and then the next few minutes your in agony! I hate it because I can't seem to do anything around the house! I'm even a stay at home mom, simple chores seem almost impossible to do. I feel so helpless! I'm so glad that my 5yr old daughter is actually really helpful. When I couldn't walk, she's right there to lend me her shoulder, but being only 5, she can't do much in holding my weight. It just makes me smile tho when she tries. What's really funny and not so funny at the same time is that my husband almost feels my pain. He really is having sympathy pregnancy. So sometimes he isn't of much help to me, especially when he's feeling nauseous and pain! I really wish there is something out there to relieve the pain. More than just the typical physical therapy, stretches, yoga, exercise, hot/cold packs, tylenol, etc... Gotta invent something for those of us women who have done everything and still can't get rid of the pain. I feel for those women especially that have to go to work. I can not imagine myself going to work in the situation I'm in. Thanks to all for your written comments and support. Wish everyone a well pregnancy!
What an interesting and funny article (I mean that in the kindest possible way as I understand the pain you were in). I didn't have any sciatic pain until I decided to do yoga 3 months after my son was born and pulled my sciatic nerve. After that I was in excrusciating pain until I went to an Oesteopath for treatment. I still have the nerve twitches down my leg when I an tired. A very well written account.
Yep I know how you all feel. I am on my 3rd, and finally a girl. It is different but my right thigh has been numb almost the entire time. Oh and I love the shooting shocking pains and tingles. With my first it was the worst, Doc gave me tylonol with codine so I could sleep, I don't know how many positions I tried just for a good hour of sleep. I had to keep flipping over to the other side each hour because the pain would wake me up about that often. 2nd boy, my hip gave out for an entire day, doc said go to a physical therapist, and couldn't get in. So Doc told me have hubby rub it out for me. "Hubby will you rub my butt" haha, that was the funniest thing to ask but it worked, I could walk. I am 32 wks now and doing ok this time.
He,He,He. I am 32 weeks pregnant with my second and almost got a handcap sticker for my car at work because one of the guys saw me try to walk to my car and not make it. I found myself standing in the middle of two lanes on one leg waiting to be able to put pressure on the other again. This was after my hip gave out already about 15 times that day at work. I am lucky I didn't bust my lip open. But it was gone the next day and it comes back off and on. I'll be walking and my hip will no longer be there! This happens alot at night and I found that hopping on one foot is a very effective way to get to the bathroom anyway. So I too know the pain you are going through. I just hate how I can't tell when it is going to happen. I'll be fine then just simply can't walk for a few minutes....then fine again. Or it could be an all day thing. But it's almost over! Hang in there!
i actually started have sciatic nerve problems around 6 months and my doctor sent me to physical therapy...we tried many different things but it winded up turning into energy excerises(which hurt the least) and yoga...plus i have a crazy looking maternity belt. but i barely have leg or back pain anymore. if i stand too long or am constantly going up and down stairs i get shooting pains. but im much better now...
I am seriously crying right now because I was laughing so hard reading this article. I have the same problem with the sciatic nerve, this is my 1st pregnancy so it's nice to know that pain is unfortunatly normal. Another thing I can relate with is the fact that people seem shocked at how big I am. I'm 5'1 and I have to admit, it does look like I'm carrying twins. I'm in my 32nd week of pregnancy and have only gained roughly 20 pounds which is normal so I would like to think I'm not a complete blimp like peoples "glances" make me out to be.
I had the same thing happen to me at Target. It was not fun. My husband thought I was going into early labor when the nerve pain hit me and I screamed. Luckly we were already in the trunk. I know how to help. I got a massage it helped for a little while but I would have needed one almost every day. Then I went to the Motherhood store and found THE STRAP. It helps hold your belly up and my back felt better right away. I put it on FIRST thing when I get up and it is the last thing I take off. That is the key. Were it all day every day. It really made a difference in how I felt after getting ready. It is not such a job and I accually feel like going somewhere when I finish. I would recomend it to everyone it really changed my live.
I too feel your pain. Never had such pain, but it almost started to happen the day I found out I was pregnant. It makes me almost fall down, I catch myself all the time...people think it is the baby or whatnot, but as another woman wrote, it is my "psychotic" nerve!!!
I feel your pain. I am 32 weeks pregnant and have had that nerve pain since I was 14 weeks pregnant. I haven't had any sleep for the past 3 nights with the combination of very bad hip pain and nerve pinching and yet I still seem to make it to work. I am not really looking forward to the rest of the pregnancy with this kind of pain. Especially when people look at me funny as it is, walking like a penguin.
Thank God you identified this horrible pain! I thought I was dying! Can't wait to give birth! lol. I am sure it will be interesting.
This week I finally sucked it up and got one of those jazzy scooter type shopping carts At Walmart. It's really embarrassing, but wow I can shop a lot longer and I don't have to pee as often as if I'm standing and walking. It was so great, I've been 3 times this week already.
I have been on pregnancy disability since month four (FOUR!) of this pregnancy (32 weeks now), I guess my ligaments are too lose and aren't holding my pelvis at the correct angle so my nerve is pinched. Anyways, I have to say that was the funniest thing I have ever read in my life! Thanks for that, you almost made me pee my pants...
Oh man, I was starting to get really worried, worried enough to call the doctor! I'm almost at 30wks now, and I have been walking a lot more than normal, just to get some last minute exercise in before delivery. I was doing just fine, a little swelling in my ankles now and then, when all of a sudden yesterday my left hip felt like someone had removed my tendons and ligaments and replaced them with broken glass! I was thinking I had just over did it, but it's lasted all day and all night, and all day today, so I'm thinking it's the nerve. Bleh, anyone know any simple home remedies to relieve it? I'm relieved already though, knowing it's not THAT normal, but not completely undeard of. Good luck to all you other mommies, I feel your pain
The same thing happened to me with my first pregnancy. I thought I was an all star and could go bowling twice a week and hike right along with my husband... ... How wrong I was. I experienced the same thing as you, the only way to help the pain was seeing a physical therapist. She rubbed out the pain once a week. Now on my 32nd week of my second pregnancy I have slowed down and had a wonderful pregnancy!
I have been looking for a place to have a conversation about this subject, I to have this problem and with my first pregnancy my Doctor took me off work early because I couldnt stand or walk. This time I'm now 32 weeks prego and I have had the pain since about 14 weeks and it's always there, sleeping, sitting, laying down and getting dressed is the worst I have to put my left leg in first or sit otherwise I have such pain just to get dressed. As for charlie horse's I hadn't had them until athis last month but all I have to do is stretch my left leg or move it a certain way and I'm freaking out in pain. Are these two issues tied together?
This had me laughing to the point of tears again (as so many of these entries have). I had horrible sciatic pain with my first pregnancy and distinctly remember a night when my husband went out to get me some food I was craving and when he got back I was halfway between our living room and bedroom on my hands and knees trying to get to my cell phone to let him know I was "dying". That was the first time I pinched my sciatic nerve really bad and through the rest of my pregnancy, whenever I pinched it really bad I called it my paralyzed crab stance. Lucky for me, it came and went :)
I think "psychotic" pain is a lot closer to what it actually is! I'm 8 months right now and the other morning I woke up with a charlie horse on my calf the size of a baseball!! If I could of caught my breath I would have screamed! LOL Now I'm walking with a definite limp and I'm hoping it won't last until I deliver!
I know this feeling all too well, I'm only 16 and I'm 8 months along with my first baby, and people already look at me enough seeing as I'm young, but then when they see me waddling around like a penguin, you know they are thinking good god, that girls got it bad. haha, nevertheless, i cannot wait!
I have had pains like that where I might as well be bent over trying to walk anywhere. I'm lucky that they come to me at the end of the day when I'm at home and don't have to really walk anywhere.
Boy can i relate. I have sciatic pain sooooo bad. and i am a licensed massage therapist and know how to get rid of the pain for my clients but Lord help me if i cant help myself. LOL!!! For those of you who cant relate - count your blessings and then count them again. LOL.
Identical thing happened to my daughter Dee. Only difference she was in WALMART and had to bear the pain because unfortunately, no rescue cart was available. Had already been having pain about a month or so originating at 'Lowes', when the recent WALMART incident happened. A friend Christine told her it could be the sciatic nerve, guess she was right. She's still limping while doing the pain call.
i am sorry but i kinda thought of it as an adorable but painful story...my fiance always thinks its so cute when i have the sad i'm in pain sad lip thing going...and he loves to come to my rescue...and i know i would just smile and think man he's such a hero if i saw a pregnant women being pushed around by her husband..lol..i always need help getting up because i have already have bad damage to my tail bone so pregnancy doesnt make it any better. Oh god and i hate that when people say you poor thing because ummm hello i know...i'm big ok...i got it...geeze....i look like i'm ready to pop on valentines day but i'm only 61/2 months and a lady comes up to me and says geeze honey you look ready to burst are you ok...i was like uhhh yeah with a big and very fake smile on my face....i hope your pregnancy went well. I only have 53 days to go!!! yay!!!
I have had trouble with mine from early pregnancy due to a previous back injury. Not looking forward to the last 8 weeks.
At 18 this is my first pregnancy and im so estatic that im not the only pregnant woman out there that has been in so much pain due to that nerve. Im 7 months pregnant and for most of this pregnancy my nerve has been pinched. I have never wanted to cry so badly in a public place before. The only thing that has helped me, which i encourage all to do is a yoga pose called "the swan" and if you dont feel a strong enough stretch the yoga pose called "the pigeon" helps also. They are suppose to be designed specifically for that reason. So ladies enjoy
The Titanic line is what really got me. I snorted, and I'm at work. My husband keeps offering a wheelchair because I hobble worse than my grandpa, but I keep trying. No more! I give up, and I won't walk to tears anymore!
I know - This type of pain and the spasms are very isolating and emotionally straining. More women should get talk about it, more research done on it as it is NOT a normal part of pregnancy or incurable. I was diagnosed with "sciatica" at 7 months, had to leave work and still can't return. When I went to physical therapy I found out my hip was out of alignment, my side and bottom tendons/ muscles (iliotibial bands and gluteus muscles?) were too tight and my pelvic muscles were straining to hold together under the excess weight, thus pressing on some nerves and going into spasms. They got me better enough so I can walk about the house or the store on most good days, so long as I rest, sit, lie down the rest of the day. The key is to get good physical therapy, don't do things that hurt, and get rest. It's not true sciatica, however - it's called "pelvic girdle pain" or "symphsis pubis dysfunction". Look it up! And don't give up.
Thank you for making me laugh - although I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time.
I have the exact same problem. I just started my 32nd week of pregnancy and I've been in pain for about 2 months already. I can't wait for my hip to quit hurting. There's time when I lay on the floor and I can't get back up because I feel like my hip is going to pop out of socket.
I have a pain that shoots from my back to my knee and yes it hurts just seeing someones face while it happens you can tell its not fake. I get really bad charlie horses in my calve sometimes I think Im gonna fall out of my bed. lol Good luck everyone
I try to tell my husband how it feels. I say "It feels like if I take another step, my back is going to break right in half. He thinks Im being a Drama Queen! Im glad that I can show this to him and have him know that its not all in my head. Although this is a pretty common pregnancy complaint, IT HURTS! If men only knew!
At 5 mos I had to ride in the electric chairs to shop. I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes at a time with out being in agony. At 7 mos It had completely subsided. I don't know if the baby was just in the right position at 5 mos or what! You would think it more likely to be happening now. All I get is numbness. No complaints!
Boy can I sympathize. I had "psychotic" nerve pain with my firstborn and when I read about your leg dragging behind, I had to laugh. I think your blogs are hysterical.
awwweeee, i feel your pain, really i do. and your husband was awesome doing that for you even if you were having a "titanic moment".
