Week 24 : There's hair EVERYWHERE!
Pregnancy can make your body do really weird things. I won’t even go into the darker nipples or the linea negra. Instead, we’ll discuss hair.
When you think of a pregnant woman, I bet you don’t think of someone covered in hair, do you? Well, you should!
We all know that pregnancy makes the hair on your head grow faster and less of it falls out. But, did you know that the hair on your legs stops growing as fast as it did?
That’s a good thing. If you’re anything like me, you don’t have the energy to lean down and shave your legs every day. (Of course, once you have a newborn, you’ll probably go months without shaving, but that’s a different story altogether.)
Although I enjoyed having to shave my legs even less than I normally did, it seemed as if all the hair traveled from my legs up to my belly. Yes, my belly, the part of me that everyone wanted to touch. The part of me that jutted out much further than should be allowed.
Covered. In. Hair.
I’m not saying I looked like a wooly mammoth, but the amount of hair on my belly easily rivaled (or surpassed) the amount on my arms. Instead of the perfectly round, hairless bellies you see on TV or in ads, I had a big round, hairy lump with an off-center linea negra.
I’d like to believe I could have won some sort of sexy swimsuit competition with my belly, but I doubt that’d happen. That is, unless they have those sorts of things in really dark rooms.

this is so funny because i am going through the same thing. i was surprise to see how much darker and more prominate the hair on my belly has gotten!!!!! i am happy to know i am not the only one!!!!!

I feel your hair pain!!! I'm 24 weeks now and have been hairy since 4 weeks...my boyfriend is always asking if it will go away after the baby is born and thankfully it will! The hairiness was actually one of the very first things that i noticed about being pregnant!! then the morning sickness came!!! hhahaha Good luck

Oh thank you...I thought I was weird for having a hairy belly! I'm always so embarassed when my boyfriend sees it. As for the legs.....I still have to shave those suckers just as much, which is the biggest pain (literally).......those pregnancy hormones!!

Oh wow I thought it was just me. I dont want my boyfriend to touch my bare belly nor my friends. I dont want anyone to. They can rub where the clothes cover but no one is looking at the hairy belly that I have somehow adopted.

I shave my belly! Shoot! To many people wanna look at it, and I aint tryin to have noses turn up to me... hhaha! but thats the least of my worries.. my main thing is having to change my underwear 5 times a day, cause every time I cough or sneeze, I pee on myself! and it doesn't help that I have allergies AND asthma!

I love it! So I'm not a freak! I got the hairy belly sydrome around 8wks! I did notice I didn't need to shave my legs as much too. My husband thinks my fuzzy belly is funny and he rubs it to tease me. I told my sister who has had 4 kids and she was like, "Gross! I you're weird." Thanks sis. Now I feel better hearing I'm not alone.

I wasn't sure at first if it was already there or not.Then all of the sudden it started to get darker then I knew it was because of the pregnancy. I wonder why that happens. I am guessing it has to do with temperature :D

I'm so glad I ran across this page because for a while there I was wondering about this hairy situation... All of my friends have had babies and I don't remember hearing about the hair situation but it is definatly working my self confidence!!! My mom now calls me monkey! I am truly glad I don't have to shave my legs as much. I wish that would stay forever!!!

I've never heard of this, but I too have belly hair. What gets me is when you shave it, the stuble of it when its growing back. It's good to know I'm not alone. Are we sure that shaving won't make it stay after a pregnancy?

Haha! I had no idea this was a common thing. I figured I had just started noticing it because my belly was getting so huge. I'm constantly shaving it because everyone wants to see or touch my tummy! And the last thing I want is for them to pet a hairy tummy. Not too cute. :)

Well now i am relieved,see Im a seventeen year old mother to be, and before i got pregnant my belly wasnt exactly an everyday model showoff belly but i wasnt ashamed to show a little skin in the summer.Since ive been pregnant for just over 6 months I to have got alot of hair on my belly but i did the worst(i shaved a straight line down)only because i didnt no it was normal so be happy all you lovley pregnant women while you'll soon have a hairless belly ill be shaving my line for the rest of my life.....

i know how you feel, right now im 24 weeks pregnant and my cute belly makes me feel like a gorilla, i have never saw so much hair on anyones stomach. and people ask me all the time to see my belly and i half dont even wanna show them because of it being so harry. its such an embarrashment.

Oh my, I thought for a minute that I was the only pregnant female who felt this way.I was just telling my husband last night, that my hair on my legs arent growing but now my tummy is getting long blonde hairs on it. I am not Chewbaca or nothing like that either but I did notice this samething. Now I fell better that I know I am not the only one in this situation.

It's so true!!! I don't remember having a hairy belly with my first baby, but I was just looking at my stomach the other day thinking, "man, I have a hairy belly!" It is good to know this is normal. :)

I just asked the doc about this yesterday- it seems to fall out easily and it's tempting to pluck it out but DON'T DO IT!!! It does go away... I wear a cotton camisole under my shirt so if someone wants to see my belly, they can see it with my undershirt still on! But I do look at pictures of glowing, beautiful, hairless bumps and think of my white, pasty, hairy one!!!

I feel so much better now knowing I'm not the only one who looks like Chewbaca (sorry for the spelling). The linea negra is hairy all the way down as well as the fur along what used to be my obliques. Further more my son just sits on the right side of my belly which makes my already off center linea look even worse. I feel like a mutant.

This is my 3rd pregnancy with my 3rd boy. My poor belly is scarred from 2 C-sections (not the nice bikini ones, either), an off centered linea negra, and of course the wonderful hair that hasn't gone away from the previous 2 pregnancies plus all the new stuff. Isn't being a mommy great!!! LOL

I'm so glad you wrote this - I thought I was a freak when it happened with my first pregnancy ... I don't remember having to shave my legs less, though. I am 11 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy and haven't noticed any changes yet, but I am hoping for less shaving this time around!!!
I'm also a little freaked out by stories of people wanting to see pregnant women's bare bellies ... sounds like something my MIL would do, and I think she did try once with my last pregnancy. Last thing I need is her talking about my hairy, pregnant belly to anyone who will listen ...

I think that this article relieved alot of people- ME INCLUDED! I already had peachy fuzz like hair on my belly. Blonde and hardly noticeable, but present from a shaving bonanza when I was a very small child. I thought you were supposed to shave your belly. Thank GOODNESS that the hairs have stayed BLONDE, but they have gotten a wee bit darker and more noticeable and definitely longer. So does it go back or go away or what? LOL... My husband thinks it's funny, but he's so supportive. He knows it's the hormones and such and I don't shave my legs much to begin with anyways so I guess he's used to it...lol...

Thank you thank you thank you! I thought I was the only one with a hairy belly and off center linea nigra (spelling is off I know). Not only am I having that problem, my cheeks and one side of my neck has also become hairy and it causes me much distress!! My leg hair, on the other hand, makes me happy since it grows back so slowly after shaving, I almost forget I ever had hair there. Is anyone else having facial/neck hair issues? will the stomach hair go away? It's not really appealing looking at all!

Hey there..just wanted to let you know that I to am going thru the same thing...but in my case..nothing and i mean NOTHING has stopped growing. I feel bad..because im so uncomfortable about it..that I won't even let my husband touch my bare belly. Which is unfair to him..and he has no clue why...worse part about it..it dont go away for some..this is my second..and it never went away with the first!!..Good luck with your pregnancy!!!

What a GREAT article!! I didn't realize this was related to my pregnancy, but I have noticed that I have more hair around my belly button!! I just thought it came with old age?? I'm glad to hear that it is ~~normal~~well, I suppose. I too have resorted to plucking. But da*n it hurts!! I totaly agree with you. I don't like to have to bend down and shave my legs, but the whole hairy belly thing kinda freaked me out too, but my mom said that it should go away after the baby is born. Thank God the hair thing is sooo common. I always had hair on my tummy but since I'm preggers, its darker and longer! And a great deal of my mane is falling off every time I wash my hair. But I joke to my hubby that atleast I can do a graft from my tummy if it doesnt come back after delivery. :-)

Why are women so bothered about body hair? Most human beings are incapable of looking like "gorillas" no matter how much hair they think they have, unless there's a genuine medical reason... I'm glad I'm male, so I can merely procrastinate with shaving my facial hair every month or so (I'm quite lazy with that and it shows, but I don't care, it's just hair!).
I hope there aren't many women trying to tan their hairs blonde whilst pregnant... And I hope the ones who do where adequate sun cream!

Well I can say that I haven't had the displeasure of having hair on my stomach, but instead my mother and I both got the unfortunate long black hairs under our chin. How embarrassing!!!!!! What was weird was that I didn't have any problems during my first pregnancy, my son now being 2 1/2. I'm currently 24 weeks and would love to hear if anyone else has had the same problem as me.

Yes! exactly what i'm going through, too! hair on belly and off center linea negra (which my husband thinks is an indication that i'm "not symmetrical"). i actually was so offended by the hair on my belly (especially because i'm keeping exposed all the time to watch the baby kick) that i waxed it with one of those waxing strips two days ago. DON'T DO THAT! i have these red itchy dots on my belly now instead of the little dark hairs. i really hope they go away before my next doc appointment because i don't feel like explaining.

Oh, girls! I'm sorry so many of you don't like your new hairy selves. Just remember you are the female of the species and beautiful and wonderful and we love you. We love you being pregnant and are proud to know you and respect you. Femininity includes body hair. You may think it looks nasty but real partners find it part of you - and it is you that they love. Some of us prefer body hair infinitely more than a body shaved into baldness. Having said that, baldness is cool too! I hope you all have gorgeous babies like my granddaughter Isla who was born last week.

ive never had to deal with more hair on my tummy with my other two pregnancies... but this one.... yyeeahh.. long blond hairs... with a few that are darker blond.... for someone who hates body hair... its a nightmare.. i shaved it off once.... and it doesnt seem to want to grow back quickly so thats really great.. it was a few months ago that i shaved it.. it grew about 5mm but kinda stopped there... even is a lil pokey.. what i HATE is when youre pregnant and you end up getting a "wisker"... yes... i think wirey hair that grows out of your face.... i had 3 on my neck and one on my face when i was in my second pregnancy... and they have never gone away..... i also got some sort of wart under my fingernail on one finger... it was disgusting to me... i could hide it at least id cut it over and over and it would still come back.... it didnt go away till she was about 4 years old..... now im pregnant again and instead of having easy pregnancies like i usually do.. its really difficult.. so i wondering what else is going to happen to make me look like a side show freak...........

I am loving my thicker hair, but the hair that is now growing on my tummy is down-right freaky. I am blessed that I have never had hair grow on my legs, my late grandmother said that this was thanks to an Indian ancestor or two.

When I went to the Dr. for my 12 week visit to hear the heart beat..I shaved my belly, I'll confess! I knew everyone would be looking at it when he raised my shirt up to listen...I had to! I've given up on it now..it takes too much effort and I wouldn't be able to tell if I got it all...

Thank goodness for this story! I'm 24 weeks. I was sitting on the couch the other night with my belly exposed so my husband could see the baby moving. When I noticed that I have all these rather long (but thankfully fine and light hairs), I actually blurted out, "Oh my god my stomach's all hairy!" Nice way to get the attention you didn't want from the husband and the son... but I'm really glad to know that this is something that can go away once the baby comes. I am pregnant with my second daughter, and this time around, I did not get the Linea Negra, BUT, I did get the hairy belly. I would rather have the line than the hair. THe line goes away!! Good luck to all the preggos... if this is your first time, it's the most amazing thing in the world...

Normally the hair on my legs is growing back later the same day I shaved so this is great!! I only shave them once a week now! I don't mind the fuzzy belly cuz the hair is thin and blond. It's winter so I wouldn't be lifting my shirt up for anyone anyway. My stomach is perfectly viewable with clothes on.

I've never had the hairy belly. I also never had the Linea Negra. I'm lucky I guess. I won't say to much though, It might happen since I'm only 9 weeks. Thank goodnes the only people who see my belly is my husband, 2 kids and the doctors and nurses. Other than that I can only remember showing it to like 2 or 3 people. Good luck everyone. God bless!

This is such an important issue that I wish it could be included in the section about moms around this time on the site! I have been going through such self esteem issues because of this and my four year old is well-blunt! I was just talking to my mom about how I had heard your hair on your head grew faster while you were pregnant and I told her how I was confused cause I could swear the hair on my legs hardly grows at all! Now I know I'm not crazy, lol. I don't have the hairy belly, but I better knock on wood considering I'm 24 weeks and still have some time to go... but I do have the line down my tummy, my fiance asks all the time, "Are you sure that's normal?" "YES!" I scream. Is it just me or are men completely annoying right now?

Phew, what a relief. I've been searching through all my "what to expect books" to find hairy belly, but to no avail. I thought perhaps it had something to do with my baby boy's testosterone. (My leg hair is still growing like a shrub, sadly) Even though my husband assured me it was cute, I had to shave the happy trail; there's too many belly fondlers around to feel comfortable going natural.

holy hannah!!! i thought this was weird cause i have it too (the hairy belly under my belly button). i call it a treasure line but its not as thick as my husbands though. im glad other people are experiencing this.

So far no linea negra and I'm just past 20 weeks. The past couple of months I've developed a "love trail" of thick black hairs from my belly button south. This is weird because I'm a pale redhead. I also have longish hairs above my belly button, but they are all blond or translucent. Its so gross and out of frustration I already tried shaving once, but found I missed the hairs peeking out of my navel and the hairs I did get just sprang right back up. At this point, if anyone is nosy enough to want to see my fuzzy big belly, they will get whats coming to them!!

Goodness. I WISH I could say that my leg hair grows slower. Perhaps just slightly slower? But I have noticed that the hair on my "woman parts" grows in faster too and now with my belly in the way, I don't think I am shaving it properly and yes... it seems to be creeping up my belly as well. Crazy stuff. Oh and not to mention the extra chin whiskers popping out all the time.

For those people who are shaving their bellies, aren't you worried the hair will grow back spiky and worse? I am 24 wks pregnant and mine isn't very hairy at all, this is my 3rd pregnancy. I'm fair haired so maybe that has something to do with it. I haven't noticed the hair on my legs growing slower or faster but i'll watch that lol, I shaved them today and usually 3 days after it's noticable (to me anyway).

Ok... the hair on my legs grows FASTER! Same with everywhere else... I have noticed my belly getting alittle more hairier but I have always shaved at least the lower part of my belly because when I was a teen I had a few spare "happy trail" hairs.. lol not exactly something a woman wants. But the upper part of my tummy is getting thicker with the blond hair. But yeha.. my leg and arm hairs (I shave my arms) have grown SOO much faster since being pregnant..its annoying. I think i need to wax so I don't have to bend down every day to shave! lol

i thought i was imagining things, im 24 weeks and i would normally shave my legs and pits every days cos i hates hair there, and i swear it has stopped growing altogether,took me a week to notice i was shaving smooth legs, then i looked more closely, and i thought i was going mad...what a nice perk!!
but scattered dark hairs across my lower belly are NOT makin me happi
so i wax, id never shave my belly, i cant stand stubble!..

The furry belly isn't anything I'm proud of either. I'm 17, and I'm 6 months pregnant (24, almost 25 weeks) and my belly hair has gotten darker and grown thicker. I'm not to proud of that. On top of that, I have a belly button piercing scar that I have just above my poking-out belly button. It just isn't that pretty. I have no stretch marks, just alot of hair. Lol. And I'm young, so of course all my friends are like oh my gosh Faith, let me see. I'm like, noooooo thanks. Lol. But yeah I understand the discomfort with the hair completely.

i was lucky enough to have hair grow on my belly since i was a teen (note the sarcasm), so i've gotten used it aleady. it is kind of tough, the extra attention paid to that area. i'm working on a tan now! hehe, rather have the linea negra, than the linea hairy, hehe

Its nice to know that I'm not the only one! I've been extremely self-conscious about the amount of hair on my belly. Mine isn't just a happy trail that leads to the belly button...mine actually covers my belly all the way to my bra line.(which is ever so sexxxy)Not to mention the stretch marks and a belly button piercing scar that I have from a previous pregnancy. Its definately nice to know that at least the belly hair more common than I thought.

Wow- the hair on my legs seem to be growing faster than the hair on my head. It seems as though i have to shave them every day but I don't. My abdomen hasn't been growing much hair- whew!! The legs they drive me crazy. It seems lik eI have to shave them AGAIN right after I shave them the first time. I would rather grow hair on my belly than on my legs.
