When it came to pregnancy, I always wanted to know how things were for other people. How much weight were they gaining, what their bellies looked like, when they went into labor. So, of course, I wanted to know when people felt the baby kick.
When I thought of my baby in there, I always imagined a little thing, just walking around on the walls of my uterus. Yes, I know it sounds silly. I get it. But? That’s what I thought. A mall-walking fetus.
Trying to explain to someone what those first few kicks are like is trying to explain a sneeze. You see it in your mind. You can almost feel it, but you can’t put it to words.
A girl I knew had described the feeling as “butterflies in her belly.” I went weeks waiting for the butterfly feeling. It never came. Then I started waiting for big kicks. They didn’t come either.
Even better, it is more like trying to describe a fart, since that is the portion of your body that is all wonky, anyways. Go ahead. Describe one. I’ll wait.
Finally, I caught on and put the television remote on my belly. When it started to bounce, I knew it was the baby. Even though I couldn’t feel my baby, I could see that she was kicking.
The best part about when the baby started to kick meant that we had “Interactive Fetus!” Interactive Fetus was a lot of fun. You could blow on your belly and make her jump. If you pressed enough, she’d start to kick.
And sometimes, if her Daddy stuck his face next to the belly and talked long enough, she’d kick him in the face.

This is the truth...I know they care, but my mom and dad and some other people always ask that and when I tell them, they act as though I am complaining about being pregnant. I am working part time (DoD), in graduate school and having a baby. Three entities that require a lot of time. Too all the pregnant women, don't have a baby while just starting a new job and in grad school for a semi-hard subject. ITS A LOT TO DEAL WITH.....But I am happy I am having a little girl and she is soooo stuborn (lol) My partner is great with me, but dosen't deal with me being so emotional (I wish he was, but I guess I can have my 80)Love me some him....(smile)
My boyfriend felt the baby move for the first time a few weeks ago he was so shocked. im also 20 weeks and he cant get enough of it neither can i my hands are glued to my stomach
im twenty weeks now but i felt the first kick at like 14 weeks. I was so shocked i called my friend who just had a baby to see if i was just crazy and she said no i wasnt because of how tiny i am (im 5' and weighed 100 lbs b4 i got pregnant) that i will feel it before someone else might. The feeling is hard to explain. The best explaination is tiny muscle spasms. Now my baby is kicking me, moving or punching me like every 5 mins. I can get my baby to kick by just putting a little pressure on it. Its not a big fan of being poked or prodded at.
I'm twenty weeks and I have no idea if I am feeling the baby move or not. But I went to the doctor yesterday and that baby never stops moving.
Now at 20 weeks, it feels like his pushing things out of his way. "excuse my uterus wall, I just need to move this....."
my husband gets kicked all the time... its great!!! It seems she does it for me when i want to punch him in the lip.
The weight thing. I've gained 6lbs in total. I know it's not a lot at all but I'm pissed!
I'm 19 weeks now and felt my first movements at 15 weeks 1 day. I was so surprised to feel it that early - everyone thought my due date was wrong. I was so excited since this is my first pregnancy. I knew right away what I was feeling and it has just gotten stronger since then. I agree with the "roller coaster" like feeling sometimes, it can be really strange but I know its my little one moving and not gas or something else. Hubby is a little jealous and keeps asking if I can feel the baby move from the outside yet - I had to promise him that he would be the first to know and feel the baby move once that happens. I can feel a little something but it's not very distinguishable at this point. Hopefully, we'll feel it very soon!
i will be 20 weeks in 3 days and my little guy is constantly kicking me...now is when it is finally starting to sink in that there is someone in there (despite the ultrasounds thus far) and it is the neatest feeling ever!!!! i agree that the way it feels is kinda hard to describe to someone who doesn't have children yet...the best i can say is when you feel it you will know it is not gas...
Wow this is so true, i'm 18 weeks 5 days. To me it felt like I was on a roller coaster. I haven't felt kicks, then again i've never been kicked b4 so i woulud'nt know how it feels. I do feel a lot how movement, however it's hard for me to distinguish if thats my lil rugrat or gass bubbles. It also feel really sore like i've been doing situps all day. can someone tell me whats up with that?
I am 20 wks with my 3 rd child (my first boy)and I think it feels like a poke coming from within. My baby kicks really low too but I had a u/s and he was side waysand it was like he was throughing a temper inside my belly. It was so funny.
mine a little motorist haha i swear. Its always moving and i know its the baby because my belly will bounce. I had another ultra sound today (im 20wks) and the baby was sleeping. I told the tech he was lucky...then it just woke up and started to jump and move. He got a picture of it punching my bladder and kicking my belly, then it bounced:) Im still waiting for it to kick its father in the face...as of now he deserves that much haha. I do remember when i first found out how active it was though(i refer to it as an it because we vhose to not find out the sex). The doctor had to check the heartbeat at a check up and she chased it around for 15 minutes. She had to gel me up twice and got mad because i was laughing hysterically. Everytime she would get close you would hear beatbeatbeat then thump. Iy would kick/punch at it and run. Thats when i found out how stubborn it is and that it doesnt like pressure:)
i am 20weeks pregnant and i was firstly waiting for the flutters and butterflies but i got none. al of a sudden it was like having a nervous twitch in your bellie i dint know it was going to kick my stomache just grew anouther 2inches and went back to shape again. well weird but i love to lay on my back and feel it kick me it makes me feel more in love with it and more real life every day.
I don't know how to describe the feeling either. But I do know it is the coolest part of being pregnant
I don't really know what I imagined. But I do know I didn't recoginize the kicking for a while. That was with my first but with my second I knew what to look for and with this one lets see. I hope it happens soon.
I could feel the baby move about 15 weeks..it felt like gas bubbling up in my stomach..the first time my boyfriend could feel her move though was about 2 weeks ago..It was so awesome, the first time he felt her was on his birthday!
I think now it really feels like flicking, sometimes it's like I can feel something rub instead..and sometimes she kicks toward the inside and I'll get the urge to pee or a little twinge of pain in my side..I'm sure it's her because it goes away in a couple of seconds..
I have felt the baby kick many times over the last couple of weekd, it actually hurts and winds me sometimes which i suspect is normal,
My partner listens and talks to the lil bubba, and it must know who he is cos bloody hell does it move around MORE!!!
Being 20weeks i have felt this heaps b4 but not so strong, its really a fantastic thing to feel, except when you are try'n to get a good nights sleep and your back is killing you Haha
i am 20 weeks and 2 days pregnate with a little boy. i felt him moving at about 18 weeks. it feels as if i have really bad gas that constantly repeats its self. my little cousin will constantly lay her head on my belly and say B-E-B-Y.. cus shes so little she cant say baby.. but when she does he moves around she will sit there and rub her hands all over my belly and the baby will just move with her.. i could possibly say that its one of the best things ive felt in a long time. the only time that he will move is when either she is talking to him and playing with him.. or when i poke at him and play with him. but of course like every one gets.. his nights and days are all messed up.. and thinks its play time when its mommys sleep time..
hi! i'm 20 weeks pregnant with a little girl :) but i havent felt her move yet! we watched her move on the ultrasound and my husband just doesnt understand why we cant feel her yet haha...i keep thinking i feel her but it ends up being gas or something, hopefully soon! love this article by the way!
haha, i tried describing the feeling to my husband and I just couldn't.... too funny
thank you so much for writing this, I needed a laugh like you could not imagine. I am a first time single mommy so only I have felt her kick, but she loves to do it. All day long, especially when I am at church or trying to close a big slae at work. Or better yet when I am in one of my boring lectures and I start to dose off. She always takes that opportunity to jab me in the bladder, but I would be lying if I did not say I love it.
"Oh, it feels like bubbles popping,"
"Yeah, kinda like butterflies in your belly." I think maybe men are the ones who described the feeling of a baby kicking to be told to all pregnant women. The part about the baby kicking your husband in the face though...We just found out that we're having another boy, and they both kick daddy anytime he touches/touched my belly. Especially if I snuggle up to him at night, he gets kicked in the back all night. It's kinda cool...like a "That's for knocking up mommy and making her miserable," from the kid...LOL.
I'm almost 21 weeks and I finally felt my baby move yesterday!! It felt kinda like a fish in a bag....like when you go buy a fish from the petstore and put your hand up to the bag and it runs into your hand....Well thats kinda what it feels like...Like a little bump!!! I LOVE IT!!
I am 19 weeks pregnant, i started feeling my baby move at 17+ months. funny i didn't know it was my baby, i was saying that my baby is 17+months and haven't started moving as yet, just then my aunt explained what it would feel like when it starts, i was so surprised when she explained, happily my baby had started moving weeks before but i thought it was just wind in my lower abdomen. now it's moving like crazy especially at nights and whenever i lie on my back.It feels great, i love it.
This is my first pregnancy and i couldnt be happier...well when i get to see my boobe i will. i am 19 weeks and felt the baby in the 14th, has been alot of movement, my baby father felt it last week and yesterday he was extra close and our stomach were touching and the baby moved guess the baby jealous already :) we find out the sex next monday. yay. hope everyone pregnancy progresses great.
Im now 20weeks and 2 days and I still havent felt anything it also makes me wonder if my baby is okay I seen it on the ultrasound just jumping around bnut I still havent felt nothing. Just like the rest of you I feel some pressure but not o whole lot, I also feel different things all day maybe I am just waiting for my baby to give me a hard kick.
I'm 17 weeks preg. and I keep feeling these kinda throbs in my lower abdomen (where u would feel cramps), in my upper abdomen, and then sometimes I feel a little pressure on my rectum is this the baby moving?
I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant with my first child and love reading these things. Whenever I feel something that I don't think is normal I can get on here and find that other people have had it and it's normal.
I am so happy to read this! I am 20 weeks now, and I dont know what I feel. I feel different things all the time. Everyone keeps asking, and it makes me feel like something is wrong with me because Im not sure.
I'm 17 weeks preg. and I keep feeling these kinda throbs in my lower abdomen (where u would feel cramps), in my upper abdomen, and then sometimes I feel a little pressure on my rectum is this the baby moving?
Just thinkin, the remote will always move even if you weren't pregnant. It is your breathing and heart beat!
OMG I love it. The television remote trick, works every time!!
Lol!! It is incredibly hard to describe but a feeling that makes me smile. I like the analogy that it feels like popcorn or a bubble popping in your stomach.
lol
almost the same for me
i finally "felt the baby" i was so exited everytime my little princess move ill scream it juts felt so weird
and i was waiting for butterflies and it ended up tpttally different im 5 months now im enjoying every minute of it (shes moving rigth now by the way!!)
Today was my 20 week ultrasound and we finally know its a girl. She got so bothered by the probe, she kicked it right off the technician's hand. Her Daddy was oh-so-proud....well, I had a good laugh!
As for dscribing the movement, its more like a bubble has popped inside my tummy. Its that light yet you notice it the second it subsides. I never felt a thing until my 7th month with my first baby. With my second, things are different.
I'm now 19 weeks preggers, and was not sure if the feelings I have been feeling were the baby or not. The first time I felt anything I was about 17 weeks. It was a kind of pulsating feeling in the same spot for a few. I guess the popcorn theory is probably what I am trying to describe. it only happens when I am crouched at the computer or sitting in the car. The baby especially likes to move around a little after I eat a big meal!!!
I'm also 20 weeks now and I do feel the popping feelings, but I'm really nervous cause I don't think I feel them as often as I should. I usually only feel it in the early mornings and that's all. I don't know if I'm just missing it at other times of the day, or if maybe something is wrong. Am I just being over-protective and paranoid already, or could something really be wrong with my baby?
I'm 20 weeks now, been feeling the baby move for about a week now. The best way I can describe his/her movements... is that it feels like a popping feeling on the inside. Some really rapid popping when the baby is real active and a couple of pops at a time when they are relaxed. Some would say its like the popping of popcorn And they really do have their own time table!!
I am 19 weeks pregnant and I started feeling the baby move early 14 weeks. This is my fourth pregnancy. With my first son I was 6 1/2 months pregnant before I even knew he was there and the only reason I found out was that my husband and I were laying in bed and saw something move under my skin and were horrified because we didn't know what it was. Duh! We laugh now, but it wasn't funny then.
I am 17 weeks pregnant. I am anxiously waiting to feel my baby but haven’t felt yet :( Can any one tell me when exactly a baby is felt in the belly...
I started feeling my baby at 17 weeks. I was also told I would feel a fluttering or gas like sensation. The feeling of her moving is of neither sensation. It feels more like the sensation of popcorn popping inside my belly.
I think the idea of a fish is GREAT! I've been feeling movement since week 12, and in the past 2 weeks, have felt more punching/kicking feelings - not just flutters. Have had several ultrasounds due to a low-lying placenta, and can see that the baby moves almost constantly, although I can't always feel it. It's a welcome feeling and right now I enjoy it. She STOPS moving when her daddy talks, just like her big sister did.
I too am 19 weeks pregnant and have been feeling the baby move for about 5 weeks now. Except, this time since this is my second one, it is much harder than the first. the kicks and movies that is. Feels like a big whale in my stomach already! We notice baby move more when he/she likes something and less when he/she doesn't! I love the writer though, she really does give me something to laugh about every week so i will be reading every week on everything she says.
I am 19 weeks pregnant and I've felt the baby move. The very first time I felt it move, it was a flutter but after that it seems the movement was more of a stirring--like something's been dormant and now its comeing to life. That's not really a specific description but that's the best way I can put it in words. It does feel weird to me, though..I get excited when I feel it but its rather strange.
I've heard people say as the baby grows, its movements become stronger.
I can say so far the diferences in movement from my 2 boys and the little girl I am pregnant with now are that they wanted everyone to know they were there. Anyone could feel them move and my little girl like everyone to let her sleep. lol
hi i am 22 weeks pregnant and i couldnt feel my baby move at all maybe that cause its my frist time and no one can tell me what i was supose to feel when the baby did move but i did the remote thing and it was moving thanks guys
this was what i needed. i am concerned because my baby is not kicking...or i cant feel it. i have seen him moving quite a bit on the utrasounds..but never felt him. I'm gonna try the remote trick. thanks!
With my first, I didn't know at first that I WAS feeling the baby move: I thought it was something else. Once I realized what was going on, I would say it was NOT a "flutter." Weird, but I thought it was more of a slow scratching/scraping, like someone gently running a finger along the inside of your lower guts. Later, I felt what was more like flutters, then whole-body movements (after a loud noise). Then later: Haaa-YAH!
I am still waiting to feel my baby, how far were u!?
When i first felt the baby "kick" the only way i could describe it was like a little fish. It felt to me like when you buy a new fish and you have your hand on the bag and they flop and hit the bag... that is what it felt like. Ofcourse my husband thought it was the funniest thing and now just calls the baby "our fish"
how far along were u when u felt ur baby really kick for the first time?
Well the first time I felt my baby kick it woke me up cause I thought some one was tapping on my belly. Then I had a dream about watching my baby pull its leg back and kick like there was no tomorrow. My husband watched me in my sleep and watched my belly move and thats how we knew. To me it feels like some one is flicking me from inside. When my baby hears its daddy and uncle it starts going crazy. I moves all over. I love it. Sometimes it uses all limbs to hit. It goes in a patterna and it is so funny. My brother made a beat that goes with the babys movements!
I still don't know if it is the baby kicking.. but sometimes i feel a little crampy? but only for a second.
This is a funny writer
This writer is hilarious!!! I am having a tough time with my high risk pregnancy and I look forward to reading her articles every week!!!
Like you, I was waiting anxiously for the first flutters. To me, it was still hard to imagine I had a life inside me if I couldnt feel anything. I was describing my feelings to one of my customers at work and I thought she had the perfect way to describe the feelings of when they first are moving. She said it's like the same feelings you are having when you go get a pap smear. Think about...I think it's perfect. I had always heard of the butterflies, the farting, etc., but never described in that way.
Now I'm waiting for the kicks to begin.
