Week 11 : Actually, I just LOVE vomiting!

Some women are lucky; they don’t get morning sickness. There are some that have a little less luck; they get some morning sickness. Then there are the rest of us, the women with weeks of nonstop vomiting.

All that nonstop vomiting has a name: Hyperemesis. I have a feeling that hyperemesis is Latin for “Poor woman that vomits everything in sight.”

Since hyperemesis isn’t that well known, most people tend to ask questions such as “have you tried crackers?” or “I hear that ginger works.”

For many women, the only thing that works is having an 8-pound baby shoot out of her crotch

.

I know that people are trying to be helpful, but it is really hard not to go postal on someone offering “advice,” especially if you spent the night before in the emergency room, getting IV fluids for dehydration.

I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to say “Crackers? Really? That’s all it takes? Eating a few stinking crackers? I’ve been vomiting for five months straight and all I needed to do was eat a stinking cracker?”

ugh yes! i was actually, unfortunately, just taken off reglan. i have acid reflux and barret's esophogus and that makes throwing up that much worse! taking small sips of sprite makes me throw up, but it helps get rid of the heartburn because tums makes me throw up even more. i just have to keep telling myself that in about 7 months i'm going to be shoving out a baby and i'm going to wish that i was just throwing up!!!

OMG thank you! ive been to the hospital 3 times for dehydration, and im only 11 weeks along. i just got some Reglan and it has helped some, but i still pray to the porcelain god at least 3 times a day. everyone and their granny has said crackers or grilled cheese and sprite, it seems these just make it worse!

ZOFRAN!! I went through this with my first pregnancy 5 years ago. I was so sick all of the time that I lost 25 lbs in my 1st trimester and had to be hospitalized. When my doctor finally figured out to give me Zofran, even the pharmacist was condescending and asked me if I'd tried crackers or any OTC meds for nausea. I wanted to punch her. This time around though, the Dr. gave me an Rx for it ahead of time, so I'm 11 weeks along and it's been a breeze! If you're having hyperemesis, get your hands on some Zofran if at all possible! (Although, the Dr. will probably tell you to try crackers first ;-)

I swear, if one more person (IE friends & family & some strangers too) offers any more advice on how to stop the nausea and/or vomiting or makes a comparison I'll have to be locked up.
What works for 24/7 sickness? Any darn thing that I can actually stand to smell and will stay down once it's consumed!
I'm so blessed to be pregnant..LOL.

Hahahaha that's exactly it. I think that if there was more education and awareness for this dibilitating pregnancy disease, we would get less "advice" on how to get rid of "morning sickness". I've been told to suck it up, everyone gets morning sickness while pregnant. Yes, I'll just suck it up while I'm sitting here on a PICC line to feed my baby because I can't eat and haven't eaten in 4 months! :)
While I was pregnant with my son I had hyperemesis so bad I was on a PICC line for 3 months, I lost 40 lbs, I threw up blood from my throat being so torn up from throwing up. Not to mention that the TPN from the PICC line attacked my pancreas and gave me pancreatitis (which almost killed me and my son) as well as gall stones.
Now I'm 11 weeks pregnant with my second (which I can't believe I EVER got pregnant again) and I don't have it as bad, thank God!
One tip of advice - if medical marijuana is legal in your state, talk to your doctor because it IS approved for Hyperemesis. I know this is a controversial topic but in all honesty, it really is one of the only cures for hyperemesis.

When people told me to try crackers I tell them I have and it put in front of that porcelin bowl for 5 hours. Its nice to know that I'm not the only one going through this, because it certainly feels like it when I'm in the bathroom by myself.

The only thing I kept by my bed was a bucket for when I woke up vomiting! :) I used Zofran with my daughter and Phenergan with this baby and when you get as sick as I do that's all you can do! Then I get that," oh you shouldn't be on meds while pregnant." Right, let me just die from dehydration that will work better. lol! :)

It's helpful knowing other people are going through this as well. I am 11 weeks with my first. and have been vomiting constantly since about 5 1/2 weeks. Luckily only been to ER once for fluids. My problem is I am a nurse myself, and can not afford not to work. So I am at working taking care of sick people, while running to the bathroom constantly to throw up. Luckily I have a GREAT doctor, who has me on 3 different meds. To anyone who is having these problems, if the Zofran doesn't work, ask for REGLAN, as it will help with the nausea, but also aids in digestion as well. I am on a combination of both, and taking phenergan suppositories at night. Unfortunatly still vomiting, all though it has cut down from 12x a day to 3-4 or so. Good luck. Just be persistent with your doctor. Remember they are working for you, and if they are not going to try and help you, than maybe that is a sign you should look for a new doctor.

I'm one of the lucky hateable women who gets nauseaous, but is actually able to control it with the crackers and the ginger BUT I will say that I would never suggest such a thing to someone if I knew they had hyperemesis graviderum (latin for seriously bad nausea...no joke). HG is a TOTALLY different thing, it is a serious pregnancy related condition, and if you suspect you have it, I would suggest working with your Doc to get it officially diagnosed, because it should qualify you for disability from your job. I would also look for an HG support group online, because it isn't the same thing most pregnant women go through, and our "hang in there it'll be over in a few weeks" support will be useless to you.

I am going through the hyperemisis and my favorite part about it is the fact that people in my family and my friends don't have a clue what I'm going through and they constantly remind of that with "Oh I feel so bad for you, I wasn't sick at all when I was pregnant" I don't know what they're trying to accomplish but it basically makes me feel like a weakling who can't handle being pregnant. I also agree with the article because everybody gave me the same "advice" about the crackers and ginger and then the dr. said "here have some phenergen" lovely drs. I really didn't want to take pills but I figured not being able to keep food down was probably less healthy for the baby. Now I just get comments of well aren't you lucky when I was pregnant they didn't have morning sickness pills, again not realizing that what I have is not regular morning sickness. It's nice to actually hear of other people struggling for their little bundles of joy, it makes me feel alot less lonely.

I so totally agree. Although I did not end up in the hospital I was on the verge several times when I was pregnant with my first son. I was sick from the time I found out I was pregnant until the moment I delivered-in a C-section. I was literally throwing up as they wheeled me into surgery. So for 8 months I heard the same things, "Eat crackers before you get out of bed in the morning", "drink some ginger tea", "don't eat too fast", and so many more suggestions. I was so tired of suggestions by the end of my pregnancy. I am currently pregnant with my 3rd child and the morning sickness is still highly prevelant, but so far no vomitting. I would not wish hyperemesis on anyone. It is terrible. Pregnancy is supposed to be a beautiful thing, but how can any woman enjoy pregnancy when she is throwing up all the time. Good luck to anyone currently experiencing hyperemesis or any type of morning sickness.

It's nice to know im not the only one suffering. Im almost 11 weeks, and I have been throwing up constantly since about week 6. Seems to let up one day, then im back at it even worse the next day. I was throwing up blood because my throat was so aggitated, but they cant do anything for me because I can keep liquids down still. I feel like im going to spend this pregnancy in the toliet. Its definately nice to see people who relate, other than friends who had no morning sickness telling me to try crackers and all that! I JUST WANT TO SCREAM THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE TELLS ME THAT! I love this little baby already, but god is he getting the best of me. GOOD LUCK LADIES!

This is my 3rd pregnancy. My 2nd was the worst. At 8 weeks I was hospitalized for the first time for dehydration. It happened many more times through the pregnancy. I was on the maximum dose of diclectin (8 pills a day), plus Gravol, and when I went to the hospital they'd hook me up to some other anti-nauseant that didn't work all that well. I vomitted till the day my son was born.

I hate the number of people who say things like "Have you tried lemon? Suck on a lemon candy, that'll help!" Ya sure it will! Like I haven't tried every 'natural' remedy on the planet. And the people that told me I shouldn't be taking medication during my pregnancy, that I should just "put up with it", you know, like they did - have no clue what I went through!

I haven't actually vomited anything but stomach acid, but oh how I wish something would just come out! I know that sounds twisted, and those of you tossing your cookies 10+ times a day might be cursing me, but feeling your whole body contract and convulse only to produce a spitwad's worth of junk . . . not satisfying. But I am counting my blessings because 1. I am pregnant and so excited! And 2. I have not yet been to the hospital. For all of you suffering, unable to work and surrounded by people that just don't get it, my heart goes out to you and just know that we are here for you girl! Crackers my ass is right!!!

I got a beautiful daughter when all was said and done last time, but did it have to be so horrible to get her here? My two best pieces of advice are...ask your doctor for Zofran. It's an anti-nasuea medicine that is THE miracle drug. It's prescribed to chemo patients to help with their nasuea so you know it works. The other is sip, and I mean sip, 1/2 oz. of Gatorade every 30 minutes for a couple of hours. Work your way up to 1/2 oz. every 15 minutes. I found drinking it at room temperature helped also. After a while, I took a sip whenever I felt like throwing up and the feeling passed. Good luck! I hope this works for someone else!

I agree, nothing works, crackers, ginger, ginger root, zofran, compazine, phenegren (no matter the form), nothing. I keep hoping that the end of the first trimester will bring relief, but as it becomes closer my hopes seem to be getting crushed.

(I def have it now with my third pregnancy!) When I got to her office she said "Oh my, your sick!" I could have screamed if I had had the energy and bile would not have shot out! Was in the hospital for 3 days then given phinergan and zofran to go home with. The phin helped but knocked me out all the time. Second pregnancy I did the Zofran, kept me from puking but still felt just as bad, I don't know what's worse, at least with the vomitting I had about 10min good relief afterwards. This pregnancy is like the second but without meds. Haven't been throwing up just feeling constantly miserable. 11 weeks and counting down my 1st trimester!

When I was pregnant with my daughter 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with hyperemesis. I lost 45 lbs from throwing up continuously. I was put on every anti-vomit med that they make and was hospitalized for IV fluids numerous times and none of it seemed to work. I even went as far as to get surgery to place a catheter in my heart to give me nutrients (Groshong catheter). I then had problems with low and high blood sugars and had to use insulin on a daily basis (I'm not diabetic). After about 8 months of trying to deal with this HELL, my doctor tried me on a prescription for Pepcid to reduce the acid in my stomach. As soon as I began taking it, I was able to eat and drink without throwing up and I got my strength back. I gained my weight back and delivered a healthy 7lb baby girl. If you are having the same problems as I did and nothing seems to help, ask your MD about pepcid, it's safe during pregnancy and it just might work for you. I have had 2 children now and am pregnant with my third and I am still on this medication. It is a God-send! Good Luck girls!

I think at this stage it doesn't matter, if my hormones tell my stomach its time to puke its going to puke, even if its holy water. I just wish it wasn't every meal. Either way I vomit or get the dry heaves. I finally convinced my doctor that YES, I need help, and am on Zofran and Reglan. The vomiting has almost stopped, but the constant nausea is still with me. To me, the worst thing about this HG is that you can't just vomit and be done with it. There's NO BREAK from the nausea. It's enough to make a girl go crazy.

As though dealing with this isn't hard enough, you have to feel so alone on top of it. People mean well with their advice but the fact is, most people don't really understand what we're going thru. There are times when I have actually said out loud, "I just want to die." Then the guilt sets in. The truth is, I don't want to die, I just want relief. I can't function in life. I've only left my house 3x in 3 weeks. The thought of getting in a car is more than I can deal with. Thank God, my job has allowed me to work from home. Otherwise, I would have had to lose my job. I am now 11 weeks and have had all day sickness since week 6. I tried all of the old fashioned remedies; crackers before you get up, but my mouth was too dry. I tried ginger snaps, but they gave me heartburn. I thought nothing was going to give me any releif. Then a friend told me to try Sea-Bands. They are normaly uses for people who suffer from motion sickness but I tried them and they work. Although I still get sick once or twice a week, they do provide some releif and are available at your local drug store. I also tried water with lemon and that has helped when I feeling sick. Even smelling a lemon has helped. Hope some of these tips help!

I am 11 weeks. I have never been so sick in my life! I have been to the hospital to get rehydrated twice. I've probably needed it more than that. I throw up all the time. It gets so old. I can't walk around, it makes me puke doing so. I just keep trying to look on the bright side, hoping it will end soon. I get all sad and lonely being at home alone all the time during the day. I can't go anywhere. I can't drive. When I do, it feels like I'm going in circles or something. I definitely can't drive as fast as I use to. I am taking Zofran, Compazine, and Reglan. But they don't really seem to help at all espeically if I have eaten something. I just don't know anymore. I can't work. WHich my work IS understanding. I'm an RN. So, I have a job to go back to. I just hope I can go back in about 2 weeks or so. Hopefully the nausea/vomiting will subside. I throw up like yellow looking stuff in the morning when I have an empty stomach. It must be stomach acid or something. I then throw up food like 3-4 a day after all that in the morning. I just want it to stop!!!

Crackers in the morning didnt work for me.. nothing in the morning worked for me.. no matter what i ate or drank i would throw up anyways. So i would just drink a lil water to make throwing up a little easier because throwing up chunks of cracker were just gross than just the stomach acid diluted with water. This is my second pregnancy and i just turned 21. With my first pregnancy i was throwing up everything nonstop for about a week then i had to go to the hospital and get iv's and then got put on zofran to stop the throwing I came so close this pregnancy to going to the hospital but then i decided to ask my midwife to put me on zofran, which is very expensive, but the generic brand works just as good. I now take it once in the morning and once in the afternoon and i havent throw up since the day before i got it which was over a month ago. SO if you are throwing up nonstop, ask your docter for zofran it works like a miracle!

I ended up in the hospital after having a seizure with my last pregnancy. I had been vomiting all night and threw my electrolytes way off.

This time around I'm much smarter. I had the same ole HG symptoms starting at 6 weeks and after about three days of not eating much buy gatorade and nasty Saltines, I asked my doc for Zofran. She immediately thought it was a great idea. My insurance isn't too happy about it, but its cheaper than a hospital stay, ha, ha! If I hear that ONE more time, I'm gonna lose it on someone. Ok, I'll trade places with them and they can't eat the crackers and ginger and start worshiping the porcelain thrown. Then we will see how many times they say that again. Do they think I haven't tried everything possible? No, I just must enjoy puking my guts out. I'm on Zofran now, the generic, that dissolves in your mouth. Thank god, because if I had to swallow it, it wouldn't be down long. It's expensive but the little relief it brings is priceless. I have been extremely lucky, my husband has been beyond amazing. I sit and cry that I just feel so crappy and am so drained, and he just calms me and sits with me. I can't imagine being in his place and not being able to do anything to help. At least he hasn't offered me crackers. :o) Best of luck to all who relate to this!!! Do they have some magic healing propertkes? Nowadays I just quickly tell people, "Yes, I've tried absolutely everything, nothing has worked for me," so they don't get too carried away with their well meaning recommendations. To the poster who wrote about not being able to get insurance coverage for the medication that works, I have also been through that. When the nurse told me that she couldn't get the med approved by the insurance company, but that she could give me another one that "won't really take it all away but might help some," I wanted to jump through the phone. I had been vomiting every 30 minutes all night long the night before. I did end up in the ER that night, and four days later we did finally get the med approved. I guess the insurance company would rather pay for both my ER visit and the medicine.

The one thing I have found that seems to help is to take a Dramamine first thing in the morning and again in the afternoon. somtimes I still get sick, but most of the time I can keep food and drink down. I am hoping that when I hit 12 or so weeks it will pass this time. I am sick and tired of feeling sick an tired. All I can say is thank the Goddess for my husband. He has taken over breakfast duties and all of the cooking for him and our other two kids.

As for people and their dang crackers, they can stick them crackers where the sun don't shine. Next time they are throwing up real bad from the flu, I am going to sudgest they try eating crackers.

A few times a day compared to 50-70 is awesome. It's still nasty though.

Crackers are a joke. Water for me is a joke. They do have chewable prenatal vitamins that can be tried, but they don't taste nearly as good as Flinstone vitamins, which I'm told we can take 2 a day to equal a prenatal vitamin.

I hope this goes away soon. It's terrible.

Thank gosh...people who understand me. I felt so alone *cries*. I was pretty close to punching the next person who told me to eat crackers. I have been sick as a dog since 3 weeks along. And my doctor's nurse tells me that they will give me something for it, if it doesnt go away in a few weeks. So once i get to the point of not even being able to eat because the sight of food makes me throw up violently, they tell me that I have to fast for 10 hours and go in for a 3 hour glucose...(that shouldnt be a problem not eating and all) So I go in and they yell at me for not eating, do the glucose, I come back with no diabeties(thank gosh) but then they call me and tell me I am intolerant to carbs and to NOT EAT CRACKERS. After everyone and their mom has told me to eat crackers. And they all have every trick in the book. Eat them before you raise your head, eat them before you throw up, eat them doing cartwheels. And now I dont even have the option of crackers. On top of that my prenatal is making me way sick on top of that. Thank gosh there are other people who feel my pain. My heart goes out to all of you.

I can't agree more about the advice of others. When I was pregnant with my son by the time I was 6 months along I had been to the ER 6 times and the last time the finally hospitalized me. Each time I was severely dehydrated. I was vomiting everything I could get in my mouth. Water, crackers, and yes, Ginger. Not to mention the prenatals. Once those things break down they taste AWFUL. I went through this the ENTIRE pregnancy. My son is now 2 and a half and I am 11 weeks along with my second. I am already having the same problems and have lost 5 pounds (too much considering I only started at 113!) I pray that they will give me SOMETHING to subside this vomiting. I'm miserable! Just tell everyone else to sit around vomiting crackers and water all day. They wouldn't like it either!

My daughter was born a month early but a healthy 6.23lbs. 10 years later I'm trying this pregnancy thing again, and I'm not nearly as sick. I'm very very naseaus but I'm on meds for that. I never thought I'd get pregnant again because of the first time, but so far so good. I'm 11 weeks and counting!

Has crackers ever really helped anyone, for crying out loud?

I vommitted all nine months all three pregnancies. #3 was so bad, I couldn't even swallow my own saliva. I had to carry around a cup to spit into, because swallowing the saliva made me gag and gagging made me vomit. After a week in the hospital on I.V.'s they sent me home to begin eating. I managed to eat a two ounce baby food jar of food over a three day period. My husband, thought it was all in my head. He'd actually get mad at me when I'd through up because I was "wasting food".
I was afraid that my stomach was so used to throwing up that I would never stop. But nope, as soon as that baby was born the vommitting ended. Whew!

I am now 65 years old and spent all my pregnancies throwing up. However, my last live birth was the worst. I had lost 20 lbs in the first 3 weeks. I actually had gone to the doctor to have a physical to get pregnant. I was in excellent health. How then did it feel to be told it was just in my head, the need to vomit, when I became pregnant. They said it was the mind trying to get rid of the baby. I stayed in the hospital for 6 weeks with projectile vomiting. I went home and stayed in bed until I was 5 1/2 months. Still sick but able to keep water and crackers and some little food down. My husband did the cooking, and I hired help to watch my 5yr and 3 yr old. When the baby was born she weighed in at 10 1/2 lbs, and I had gained 70 lbs in the last 3 months, I was so hungary.
I had a IUD put in so I didn't get pg again. Within 6 weeks I was pregnant. The IUD was the one that failed for everyone. At a week and half I was throwing up again. I had a abortion because I could not stop vomiting and crying and had a 2 1/2 month old newborn that needed a nursing mother. Now I spent a lot of years being quilty because I had to abort. Ladies a least there is education to know what you've got and it has a name and you don't have to feel crazy or guilty.

I keep getting the "You have to keep something in your stomach" advice. Yeah? You try it! I am at 11 weeks now and my sickness is worse than ever. I now cannot even suck on an ice cube and keep it down.

My doctor's did discover however that I have an overactive thyroid and I am off to see an endocrinologist today. If your doctor has not checked this out for you - you may want to ask for the blood tests. I am hoping that it will solve my nausea problem when I start to get treatment.

Thank God for my husband! If it wasn't for him, I would surely be dead now. One thing is for sure, after taking care of me these last 2 months, he is ready for a baby.

Agreed. I suffer from the strange inability to vomit unless I'm completely relaxed (the last time I did was at five yrs, save for one time I got alcohol poisoning), so dehydration isn't a problem for me. Instead, I get the constant nausea feeling, pressure in the stomach, general miserableness, and the wish to curl up into a ball and die. So I'm lucky in that I'm not dehydrated but unlucky in that I can't even relieve myself.

I'm in week 11 right now and since week 3 or so I've had nonstop, severe morning sickness. I can't even lift a bag of groceries without getting lightheaded and almost collapsing and my beau seems to wonder WHY my sex drive has dropped since he's read that it usually goes -up-. I think this 24-7 urge to vomit has something to do with it.

I've been told ginger and crackers more times than I can count, and it does absolutely nothing. I appreciated it the first few times but I wish people would come up with some new information that you can't find on every website on the internet that doesn't WORK. The mother-in-law has been through two pregnancies so she's certain she knows everything there is to know about pregnancy--I get questions or scolded for sleeping the day away from both nausea and exhaustion, and while I appreciate the concern it's about the only way to stay sane.

I've been told nausea ends this week. I can only hope. I've been waiting for this time to come since it STARTED. But it's only been getting worse, so that goes to show how much the mainstream information is accurate on these things.

So true, so true. I'm 10 weeks with my first, and have already faced my worst fear (needles!) in the form of an IV the first time last week. I seem to have three or four horrible days, followed by a few "decent" days ie throwing up only once or twice, and mildly nauseous the rest of the time. I work in a huge retail company, and each and every one of the dear, sweet people I work with says, "Try crackers. Eat one before you even get up." Hello! If that was the magic trick, then I wouldn't be running all the way across the store to the restroom several times *an hour* to be sick! I feel like a failure, because there are four other pregnant women, each of whom is farther along than me, and none of them is leaving work early three days straight a week because they're too weak to stand up! People think I'm exaggerating how sick I am. And let me tell ya, all those suggestions of crackers, ginger ale, gatorade, small meals as opposed to big ones (yeah right I'd settle for any meal!) chamomile and peppermint tea, lemons, baked potato, etc? They just don't work. But then again, misery loves company, and I sure do have company on this site!

Also, on #2, you can choose to breathe through the mouth (i find it more soothing) instead of the nostrils.

I'll explain more on this in case you are confused. The esophagus is where the vomit will be expelled. If it is pinched shut due to the angle the head is at, the trachea (where air goes in and out) will have more room. This will allow more oxygen to come into your body and allow you to feel more replenished. The body will basically detect and think "hey..something is blocking that opening...do not even try vomiting"

Give it a try. But I would try #1 first since it's scientifically proven and #2 is based on my brother's EMT training (they use this when they do CPR so that the person they are trying to revive doesn't vomit while pounding on their chests/abdomens) and my own experiences.

good luck.

Hello! Although I'm just a 18 year old boy, I can relate to you mothers. I actually fear vomiting! I hate it with a passion. I truly believe you all are strong to deal with it. The stories you describe...I don't know if I could live with it!

Anyhow, as a result of hating to vomit, I have found some things useful when I feel nauseous from things ranging from indigestion, overworking at practice, overeating, ect...

1. Try gently sucking on a small peice of ginger root. NO NOT GINGER ALE! Just buy some ginger root (fresh) and slice a thin piece and leave it on your tongue right after you eat or begin to feel sick. This has been testing in an experiment which 28 out of 32 women experienced significant reduction in nausea and vomiting.

2. I actually heard this from my brother, who is paramedic trained. Although I'm not certain, I do try this when I feel sick and so far it hasn't failed... Just stand up straight, put your hands on the back of your head, breathe through the nose slowly, close your eyes or open (whatever makes you comfortable), and look straight up. Looking striahgt up will cause the esophagus to be pinched shut, so that there is more opening for the trachea. The body will know this and perhaps the stimulus of vomiting will cease.

I really hope those help. I hate to vomit. I feel for you all, but most of all, I just want to help. Hopefully one day I can do this for as a profession. I love helping people with medical issues!

Please let me know if all goes well!

Though, I am theorizing, that the increase in my morning sickness in the last month, from mostly once a day, every other day, to more times than I can count in one day, everyday, is due to her developing ovaries and uterus overloading my body with estrogens. Not sure if there is any truth to it, but it sounds good. I have found that the one liquid I can keep down is Glacier Vitamin Water, for some reason this is acceptable when nothing else is. (Tropical Citrus and Strawberry work best) My husband is going out and buying shares tomorrow, since I keep raiding all the nearby stores supplies. Still looking for a remedy for the excruiating headaches that have come back to haunt me with a flourish, and the diarrhea that has come out of no where. Basically, allergic to my own baby! I had the PUUPs from 7 months until I gave birth. So it was an experience to say the least. I hear all pregnancies are different so hopefully when I decide to have another baby, I won't go through it again.

Amen sister....I could not agree more. I'm 11 weeks pregnant and just came home from a 3 day stay in the hospital for this very thing. I hate when people tell me "I was a little sick too" or "My doctor almost put me in the hospital once for morning sickness". I want to say.."HELLO...I was hooked up to an IV for 70 hours stright."
Thank you for your insight. Helps to know I'm not the only one going through this.

It's nice to know there's a name for it. I threw up everyday, from 4 months until birth. For about 3 of those months I could keep nothing down before 8 p.m. Then later I would always throw up the first thing I ate everyday, no matter what it was. I was miserable, and I pray that I don't go through it with this pregnancy.

So glad to hear i'm not the only one. In fact, i feel much better now. A lot of people have it worse than me! With my first i threw up the whole nine months- about 4 times a day and during labor- but labor was cake! Only 3 hours contractions with 10minutes pushing and there was my first boy. 6 months later i was pregant again. I was terribly sick again until about 5 1/2 months. Easy labor again though! and there was boy #2. Now he is almost one and i am pregnant again! I am nine weeks and have only thrown up 12 times! Thats a record! I can actually say i feel great considering the last two! Problem is, i've already gained 5 lbs! The other 2 i lost 7! Oh know! Actually, i don't care how much i gain if i keep feeling this good. I do worry about misscarriage though. I feel like i should be sicker! Hopefully everything is fine! I sympathize with all of you. And DON'T eat crackers unless you want to puke some more!

I have 2 children, a 2 year old and a 3 year old. I threw up everything in sight for the first 4 to 5 months and lost 20 pounds each time. I was always in the hospital getting IV fluids. It sucks. I am pregnant now at 11 weeks and I have only had minor morning sickness all thanks to my best friend~ ZOFRAN~ a wonderful little pill that dissolves in your mouth and you feel better almost immediatly. It is expensive, but my insurance covers it now. My insurance before did not cover it. It is $530 for 12 pills. It is pricy, but check and see if your insurance covers it, it is a lifesaver!!!

My first pregnancy I was sick about 8 1/2 months the second about 6 months and this one its actually easing up already (13 weeks) so there is hope it may get better with additional pregnancies but if not do what i did. Stay in bed as long as possible and go back to bed as soon as possible and sip gingerale so you don't end up in the hospital. My nurse advised 1 tablespoon every 15 minutes and it saved me from spending several nights in the hospital.

Oh God, I am so glad I read this. I feel so alone sometimes it is ridiculous. I am going on my 9th week and so far 24 hours a day I have felt like my guts were going to come spewing out of my body. My stomach hurts like hell from throwing up and my throat is so messed up I cough all day long. My first pregnancy went like this the entire 9 months and I went from a size 12 before being pregnant to a size 6 after I gave birth. My husband and I used to joke that if I ever wanted to lose weight all I had to do was get pregnant. Oh how I wish that statement had not been true. So far everyone has told me that the nausea will die down this time, it won't be the same, eat crackers, get rest, take your prenatals, and on and on and on. To their advice I say SHOVE IT! If you like crackers so much you eat um. And if you can find me one prenatal vitamin that doesn't make me feel like suicide, bring um on! I swear, if I stop throwing up I might need an emergency ultrasound to make sure I still have a baby!

AMEN....AMEN.....AND AMEN AGAIN!!!!! My new hubby and I are pregnant (his first, my fifth!)due in June '07. So far I've been to the ER twice, doctors office countless times, and at home with IV therapy for a week. I've been scribed ZOFRAN (they use it for nausea in chemo patients). Lovely meds, however 20 melt in your mouth sweet relief tablets comes to the tune of $150.00 ($600.00 w/o insurance!!). These little blessings are taken up to 6 a day! Our baby will cost more BEFORE leaving the womb rather than afterwards!! Anyways, this is not my first experience with hyperemesis gravidarium...I went through it the first time when i had twins....the second time when I lost a baby in the 3rd month..the third and fourth times as well. It's a nine month battle, there is no twelve week magic feeling better point. I am NOT a "pretty and glowing" mom to be! I carry around an empty pop bottle as a spit cup, because to swallow the excess saliva would surely send me to my throne again. I have dark circles under my eyes from the dehydration, and no cute little bump to show off here, I've lost weight. Ultrasounds assure us the baby is doing well and growing. Finally..a smile to speak of. There is no remedy or relief other than delivery. I think this was Gods sense of humor because I was so scared to go through delivery. You go through this for nine months, labor schmabor!! Bring it on!!!! Just please..DO NOT GIVE ANY ADVICE ON "MORNING SICKNESS"....Just smile politely and stay out of my bathroom....I will live there for at least 6 more months!!!

Thank God...I found this site. I've been sick for 2 weeks. I'll be 9 weeks on Thursday. Having morning sickness is bittersweet. I'm happy because it reassures be that things are going okay (potentially). But, excessive saliva, taste buds out of wack and vomiting have made me a cranky person. I couldn't even go to work today. I had an "accident" on myself as well as all over my car. I've been eating crackers, ginger ale, ice, sprite and all the remedies and I'm still not feeling btter. Tired of the dh and all of the "let's tries". I know he's trying to help, but uggggghhhhh!

I had the joy of having hyperemesis from the moment i found out i was pregnant (at week 7) until the moment i delivered. There were times that i couldnt even leave the bathroom in the mornings because if i did, i was back in there in less than 3 minutes. I had to call into work sick so many times that i almost ended up losing my job over this. I had to be brought to the ER 3 times by the staff that i work with at the hospital (i'm and RN) so that i could get rehydrated because i hadnt been able to keep anything down in over 2 days. I even puked while i was having contractions! But looking back on it i have to laugh a bit. it was the best diet i'd ever been on, because after the baby was born, i was 15 pounds lighter than when i got pregnant. Now my daughter is almost 2 and beautiful than ever.

p.s. i 100% agree with the crackers thing. there were times that i wanted to shove the crackers down the person's throat if they suggested it to me one more time.

OMG thank you ladies! I am nine weeks, and have been puking the entire time. I've called in sick to work, I run to the bathroom all the time if I am at work...and the worst thing, I havent been working there that long and none of the managers have ever been pregnant nor known anyone closely who was pregnant, so work is hell. They suggest CRACKERS, or yell at me, im never sure which. I just wish i could yell back sometimes. To top it all off, my fiancee didnt believe that I was so sick(even though he was there) and when i decided enough was enough and i went to the ER, he told me i wasnt sick, i just needed to eat...and made me a big glass of milk and two pieces of toast, which i puked uncontrollably from at just the smell...I freaked out. After getting to the ER im told im dehydrated, dangerously low on pottassium and have a UTI to top it off! i spent all day hooked up to an IV. Bad thought---screw all of those people, they now know what i've been telling them. IM SICK AND CRABBY, let me sleep so screw you and your crackers. sorry to rant, but its great to know im not the only one.

Here is a comment from someone who only had mild nausea. I kept wishing I would vomit I know that sounds crazy, but I kept reading about the women who had severe morning sickness had a low percentage of miscarraige. I had a miscarriage last year and am now 11 weeks pregnant again, from the time I got that faint blue line I remembered reading that and thinking I wish I would puke because then I could take comfort in the fact that at least if was puking then I would still be pregnant, without that major sign of pregnancy your mind makes you think carzy things. You feel your boobs everyday to make sure they are still tender, and that is all you have to go by. Crazy I know but thats how I feel.

Loved the article! It was nice to know that I'm not the only one feeling this way. I printed the article and posted it to my fridge. Anyone that comes to my house can read it and not even mention a damn cracker. I can't even begin to tell you how many people offered their advice on the 'cracker' thing. I also was hospitalized for dehydration and the first thing the nurse gave me was crackers! Food has been nonexistent to me for the past 6 weeks and it is really difficult for other people to truly understand how you feel or what you have been going through. I try to be patient but sometimes you just want to tell them not to bother with the advice. I'm on Zofran (outrageously expensive), Phenegran and Companzine. Nothing has worked. I'm starting to think the only thing that will work it time. I'm 12 weeks now and am still extememly nautious but have decreased my vomiting from 15-20 times daily down to 2-3. Pretty good improvement and I'm hanging on to the hope that I will feel normal again any day now and able to eat a real meal....

This is the first site that I can actually relate to. The sickness is horrible, but being able to have a sense of humor about it (if only for a moment) really helps. I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and still terribly sick. I threw up at work yesterday and had a horribly humiliating meltdown with tears and the whole bit. I am just so tired of being sick all the time. And being sick all the time makes me worry that something is wrong. I've never posted on a site like this before, but it really is refreshing to know that other women feel as miserable as I do. Happy miserable, but miserable.

OMG!!!! Finally someone that thinks like I do. I've gone the hospital 4 times already and I'm not even out of the first trimester and all the nurses could tell me, as an IV was dripping inside my vein, that I need to eat more crackers!!!! OH I was furious, if only I had the energy to do something about it. I've been so sick. I had to quit school and work. No one understands why I can't just keep it down and do my job like everyone else. It makes me feel like such a failure when other mothers tell me that they could do it and it's a mental thing and I can do it too. Can't anyone understand that I'm so weak, I barely make it to the bathroom anymore. Some people really need to just shut up and understand that we are not all as strong and capable as they are.
Well, that's all I had to say. I agree with you entirely!!!

Finally people who can relate. I was released from the hospital at 10.5 weeks pregnant for dehydration. Preggie pops or drops never worked, nor ginger ale, nor crackers, nor lemons, not even the motion sea band.....BASICALLY NOTHING! What finally did work and get my OB attention was the call from the ER and a prescription of Delectin. The side effects are extreme headaches....but thats still a little better then getting bruises on my knees from kneeling so much on the bathroom floor. I'm 12 weeks now still nauseated with no appetite but the vomitting is so much better. I look forward to a good meal one day! Good Luck to all of you.....Don't give up it was all pass.........

Ok, I went to the hospial to get "rehydrated" at 10wks pg with my ds. I had not been able to hold anything down for 10 days (including h2o) and was now vomiting blood and Bile Lovely stuff. So ER nurse says "don't worry we'll give you an IV and you can go right home. Maybe you should try some Crackers." They hook me up and I begin vomiting uncontrolably. I did not go home for 4 days and was unable to eat til my last day in the hosptal 1/2 a blt. On my way home I was told "by the way your insurance refuses to cover the only meds that work because there is other treatmaent". They didn't work it took all four days to find one that helped........ERRRRRRRRRRRRRR still so mad. I spent the rest of my pg on bed rest and my liver even began failing and still my insurance refused to cover the meds. My son is now a healthy 1 year old and I have finally recovered a year later. Crackers my Asss.

Haha! I agree. I'm almost 26 weeks and still kneeling before the porcelin throne. Dilectin works but it's very expensive 2$ per pill and when your doctor says take it 4 times a day 5 pills in total... Ha... Ha... Ha... Espeacially when most health plans don't cover it.
