Week 10 : Shop till you drop (your pants)

I started buying maternity clothes the second my pants felt a little tight. It didn’t matter that the reason they were tight was that I had just consumed a large meal; I was pregnant and needed an entire new wardrobe!

Only problem? All those large jeans belly panels aren’t meant for a 10 weeks pregnant woman that consumed an entire cake because “the baby needed it.”

Shopping at a maternity store before you’re really showing is somewhat embarrassing. It’s kind of like all those times I bought bridal magazines without a ring on my finger: You know most people think you’re just jumping the gun.

Every time I’d walk into one of those establishments, I’d try my best not to make eye contact with the women with big bellies. Even though, in theory, we belonged to the same club, it seemed they were a little more qualified to search for pants with belly panels than I.

But, what’s a girl to do? Invest in a nine-month supply of sweatpants? Walk around with my pants unbuttoned, just waiting for the day they fall down to my knees?

No, I’d buy my pants and try them on with the “fake belly” pillows they leave in the dressing rooms.

Just don’t ask me to model my new outfits outside for everyone to see.

I'm 10 weeks today, and I've just ordered maternity jeans online. I had to - I don't fit into any of mine jeans, and B&M stores somehow have only sizes starting from 18 (I'm size 2). I have now idea if my new jeans (no stretchy panel, just sit below waist) are going to fit, but at least I can grow into them :)

LOL im 10 week i have bought maternity clothes bc im sick of sweat pants and i cant get into my normal clothes. i dont care what people think, every woman is different and each show at different times. with my first i gained all my weight the first trimester and i slowed down. i looked the same from 2 months til 6 months. its not sad, or embarassing to me. its the way my body is. granted i know its not all baby at this point, its mostly major bloating going on, but it is what it is. i dont eat whole cakes, or dozens of doughnuts, i dont dont drink pop, or chug milkshakes all day long. i eat normally. in fact ive gained 15lbs already and ive been eating less then when im not pregnant. is my body. nothing to be ashamed of, and if the dr. told me to slow down and loose weight this early on id find me a new dr. lol. be proud of yourself regardless. i would want my baby to walk with their head held high no matter what, so i should start him or her off on the right foot and hold my head high for them! so what if im showing at 3months and need mommy clothes? i think women who glare are jealous bc they didnt show so soon! id wear what i want when i want. i dont particulary care what another woman thinks of me or what i wear. LOL. ive known overweight friends, who have bought maternity clothes bc they fit them better and looked nicer and they werent even pregnant! LOL

Last weeks my grandmother decided I needed maternity clothes even if my own clothing still fit or not... . So she made me go try them on... . then decided to tell me that they didn't have enough room in them even though they were a size 20 and I'm only a size 14-16 and the pants were falling off me!!!! !
I'm wearing sweats and my husbands shirts from now on!

LOL~ My husband told me last night that he is goin to just order me some new ones because he hates to see me wash clothes everyday! I've only gained 8-9lbs but I swear I'm huge! I don't know what's happening! I tried on some size 13-14 jeans yesterday and they were so tight it wasn't even worth buying them!

I also think my belly looks bigger than any pictures I see in books or magazines, but it doesn't get me down. We'll grow at our own rate, and we'll be comfy while we do it!

I realized I want so skinny and was tired of every time i wanted to go eat some where nice or go town for any thing having to alternate between my brown or black pair of scrub pants... Although to an outsider it just appeared as if i was wearing some type of cargo-ish pants.. I knew they were scrubs and personally didn't want to sit across from my oh so beautiful fiance ( I swear to god at times he just makes me melt cause he's just so darn purty..) feeling like a bum out to dinner in p.j.s, and mean while the girl across from us looks like freaking miss America... Needless to say I went out, got me some new clothes, and felt better about myself, and like a pretty pregnant young lady, instead of over weight and not enough class to at least put on a good pair of jeans and a stylish top, to eat some where nice....

When I told my best friend that I was pregnant, she gave me the best advice ever in reference to maternity clothes. You can extend the wearing time of your regualr pants (unless your butt and thighs get too big before your belly does) by putting a rubber band through the button hole and back around the button. I found with some of my button-less pants (the little metal hook kind) by using a paper clip. Worked all the way through week 27! Now I really do need to go and buy new pants...

Why in the world would you buy the 1960s big-belly-panel pants at 10 weeks (or at all, for that matter) when there are so many other options actually MEANT for that awkward "my regular clothes don't fit but I don't have a big pregnant belly yet either" in-between stage!?

Anyone who's been really been pregnant should know by now that there are all sorts of options in the tummy department ... semi-panels that come half-way up, roll down yoga pant versions and, my personal favorite, those that look like "normal" jeans but have added elastic backing (but look "normal" from the front) or a thin two-inch-high band of soft cotton-covered elastic rather than the regular constricting button closure. Either are meant to go below your growing belly, so they generally have very few fit problems.

There are even entire lines devoted to the first two trimesters and intended to carry over postpartum! And most are no more pricey than the full-panel jobs this woman's writing about. Old Navy has plenty of affordable, even attractive items meant for this stage exactly. And quite frankly, if you like the under-the-belly type like I do, they'll generally last you through your entire pregnancy and into the first few months with baby, until your pre-baby clothes feel comfortable again. I've had three children and am pregnant with my fourth, so I'm definitely speaking from experience here. LOL

But what is up with the dated pregnancy humor? I mean, sure, it's funny in an "I've never been pregnant but if you were in 1982 I can see how that would be funny" sort of way, but it's not most women's current experience with pregnancy fashion -- which is making HUGE strides (I prefer my maternity wardrobe to my "normal" one! LOL). Frankly, this article seems a bit misleading for many first-time-moms.

I am 11 weeks. I'm not "showing" so much as rreally bloated and barfy and not into tight waistbands or control tops - I don't care if its 'too early' - bring on the elastic waist.

I just bought a pair of demi-panel pants on sale at the Gap and its the best $25 I could have spent. My bloated belly is SO much happier and they look better, and maybe I'm crazy on hormones but I think they actually look better because they aren't digging in like my regular pants were and creating lumps. They fit my butt and legs just like my regular size, and there is room for belly growth, so I'll get lots of wear out of them for months to come.

I consider it an investment. Wearing your regular clothes when you're too big for them will stretch them out and make them look weird when its time to get back into it.

A good minimizer bra will help get more wear out of blouses and t-shirts and support the twins.

Funnily enough they were too big for me before i got pregnany! I am just so glad i read all of your comments because had i not i would still be thinking that i am over eating and feel fat! Although i think i will still feel fat until my bump gets big enouogh for maternity wear!! Good luck to all of you preggers ladies out there!!x

OMG, this was so great, lol. I'm 10 weeks, and I thought I was just eating too much. I don't remember needing bigger clothes when I was pregnant with my daughter(7years). I really need new everything! Especially panties ha ha. Everything is so tight on me.

I'm almost at 11 weeks, and before I was pregnant I had a small pooch any way. So - I haven't been able to tell if I was actually getting bigger, or if it was just my pooch. My pants were tighter and I had to unbutton them, just like the previous ladies... The only pants I can wear semi-comfortably are the few low-rise pants. These comments helped me feel like I'm getting bigger because my baby is, not because I'm getting fat myself. I think the rubber band idea is great for those days when I need to wear my work oufits. Thanks ladies and congratulations!!!

After reading this article and looking at the photos of the other girls I am starting to feel better. I am 9weeks along and feel so fat. Both my sisters and mother didn't start wearing maternity clothes until their forth or fifth month! My low-rise Guess jeans still fit but that is about it. My tops don't fit anymore because I have gone from a B cup to a C cup within this past month. I have now had to buy maternity tops at least or resign myself to getting a bigger size shirt that I may or may not fit after the pregnancy and definately not when I am really showing. My wardrobe is shrinking at such a rapid pace I see myself wearing the same five outfits to work each week. I don't care what the ladies at the store think but what the other ladies that I know think. I feel like pulling my hair out.

I'm SOOO glad that I found this site too, I have a few friends who are expecting who are further than me and the little size 0 types, me being a 10 not pregnant and my third pregnancy has my clothes not fitting so well but this pregnancy is soooo different I never showed or felt pregnant this early I think it's because this was planned but still I was getting annoyed but this trick worked for me, buy one of those belts that have the half circles if that makes sense the ones you fold over in the circle things you can rock your norm jeans with them unziped and unbottoned and NO ONES knows and you don't look like you dropped a load like you would in maternity at this point lol, those bands are great but I feel like I'm going to lose my pants. Only thing that sucks is I'm gaining all over and I hate this fat cow feeling hopefully soon I'll be out of that feeling and feeling good, great and pregnant and fashionable too :) CONGRATS to you all and thanks for your great comments MWAH

I thought I was the only one, seriously. I miscarried in June at 5 months with my first pregnancy and I didn't gain much too early. But this pregnancy I am 10 weeks and I look like I'm about that x 2. But honestly, sometimes its hard to find maternity clothes that you like and for different occasions that dont cost 100 bucks for just one shirt.

I have found something to solve all of your problems! It is called Belly Ups. They are mini-suspenders to help hold your pants up. They sell them on BabyCenter and also at www.bellyups.com. I can't live without these - I wear them almost every day!

I'm also 10 weeks, adn I'm having the same problem. My old clothes are too tight and uncomfortable to wear anymore, yet I'm not ready for maternity. I'm going out to buy those black elastic dress pants that you can find in the womens section of most department stores. They're comfortable, yet professional. Good luck ladies!

At 10 weeks, I can still, "suck it in," and be comfortable. The rubber-band idea is great, and I'm going to try it as soon as I get home today! I also just bought a Belly Band (called, "Bella Band"), and I love it: I fold it in half so it doesn't ride up from my tiny tummy, and it feels like a gentle hug, instead of a firm squeeze. If you're thinking about a belly band, search for boutiques in your area that carry them (Google Bella Band). The shopkeeper let me open one up and try it on right there to see if I liked it! I got the one with lace at the bottom (cute!), and my pregnancy is still, "my little secret."

earlier in my pregnancy i was so excited that would be showing soon that i went to the store to go and buy me some maternity clothes....come to find out they arent exactly the cheapest price in the world.....atleast for us cheap military people that dont make all that much money....i find that if you buy a size or 2 up in regular jeans you end up saving money....because after you give birth you'll be able to fit into those regular jeans alot quiker and it will make you feel like your loosing the weight alot faster....also if you have any friends that were recently prego you can see if they have any good hand me downs....believe me you'll fit into more than you think...

I know how you all feel! 10 weeks and nothing fits, a cheap way of doing it is to buy the next size up from charity shops each time the waistband gets tighter, until you're big enough for 'big maternity pants'!

Ughh...thank god I found this website...I'm about ten weeks and my belly is growing...my pants don't fit that well and they are uncomfortable. I feel like I'm exagerating, but its the truth. I'm embarrased to go to the maternity store, so I bought some regulear pants just in a large size.

I just went through that for the first time last night! I felt so fat and knew I must be showing to everyone else in the world in my 'normal' jeans, but as soon as I walked into the dressing room, I felt terrible. At 10 weeks, I felt so weird trying on huge pants and having people tell me I was actually going to need them.

I say, don't feel embarrassed. I am only 10 weeks and wearing maternity clothes already. I did the rubberband trick and it worked well for a while. I also bought the belly band but I didn't like it. It rides up under my bustline (which is NO fun in public) Anyway, this is my 3rd child and it is normal to show faster with more prgnancies. Also, everyone is different, some women just show very early. Check out the calendar girls page, I am bigger than some of the 18 weekers and smaller than some of the 8 weekers. Bottom line, do what you are comfortable with, God knows we go throught enough just being prgnant.

That is SO FUNNY!! OMG! That is me talking! I feel exactly like your article. My clothes are feeling tight and uncomfortable and even more so after eating. I walk around with my pants unbuttoned and sometimes unzipped as well. I want so bad to wear my maternity clothes and go shopping for new maternity clothes but I'm embarassed go shopping incase people ask me, 'how far along are you' uhh, l'm only 10 weeks but I look BIGGER! I've been hoping that I'm actually further along or maybe there's an extra baby in there somewhere. Then my size would be justified.:-)

It's weird, because my MIL took me out to shop for maternity wear this past weekend, at exactly 10 weeks along. I cracked up in the dressing room because there were some pants that were absolutely gigantic, but I know I'll need them soon! It was actually kind of fun...I'm looking forward to showing now!

I, too, just bought my first pair of maternity pants at only 10wks! The saleslady at the store was sooo welcoming. I told her my dilemma of shopping so early, but she told me women start shopping for mat clothes as early as 6wks, or women who aren't even pregnant yet, but are trying to conceive. I even ended up with pants that have the extra big panel and I LOVE THEM!! Everything is smooth, I don't ever want to back to regular pants! To all the newly pregnant women out there, get out and do some shopping! 9mths goes fast!

This made me crack up, my best friend and I went to the much dreaded maternity clothing store last night. I have been fighting it, but my clothes keep shrinking and I need bigger ones, te same problem occured...they weren't meant for someone only 10 weeks. So, I bout a pair of "stylish" sweatpants, and a pair of gouchos...(which I hated the looks of up until last night when that is all that would fit right.) too funny...once again, I'm not alone.
