About the pregnancy cartoons

After many sleepless nights spent pondering the humorous nature of pregnancy, our yet-to-be-pregnant cartooning artist realized she was going to need some help from moms who'd been there. Happily, a beautiful collaboration between the artist and our snarky freelance mom blogger, the sarcastic journalist, sprung up to save the day! The humor was conceived together and each panel was hand-drawn by our relieved cartooning artist.

I know how you feel Samantha, when I get my blood work done all they have to do is take 1 tube of blood and I'm dizzy and sleepy all day long. When I was pregnant with my second, I got my suger test and all I can say is it's a good thing my son was sleepy that day, because there was no way in the world I was able to stay awake. I tried, but I almost fell off of my chair, falling asleep. I had to give in take a nap. Man I felt guilty. I felt like if I wasn't awake at all times during the day then I was a horrible mother. I learned to forgive myself.

i would definately relate to this cartoon the most. i used to fear needles like no other, but after all the tests they did and blood they took with my first pregnancy, i just completely got over it. except when the nurse has to chase my vien. only happened once, but i seriously almost passed out! heh

I agree Carissa!! I wish there was a way around all of that testing, but I don't see another option because my husband and I are both terrified of going to a midwife. And that's about the only way to get away without any testing. Oh well. God bless!!

the needles were definitely the worst part! I have a horrible phobia... it took me 3 tries, 32 weeks, a lot of xanax prescribed by my doctor, and 2 therapists and my husbands threat of divorce to finally get my blood work done... I figure if women had babies for centuries without being poked and prodded and having a test for everything under the sun done, then is it really THAT freakin neccessary??

... This is a little unrelated but the artist comment reminded me on what happened at one of my appointments. At around 36 wks or so you have to do the strep test... I guess that's what it is.. I don't really pay much attention anymore, anyway, The doctor's gotta swab down there... and I hadn't had any complications or anything and no one had checked my cervix or gone down there or anything since my initial pap and I was a little uncomfortable and I am military and rarely am able to make an appt. with MY doctor.. so I requested a female doctor just to make me feel more comfortable... and when I got there she was training a younger male and I said, "heh.. I knew you had to do this test today and I was a little uncomfortable so that's why I requested a female doctor." and she said, "Oh, well we're training him, he won't be doing it, he'll only be watching" I was thinking, Oh, that's MUCH better. And to make it worse he wasn't just like casually looking or glancing.. he was like leaning around her and peering ... it was very uncomfortable...

this one was one of the slower ideas... it's more a commentary on how pregnancy-- a universal and natural part of being a fertile female, has turned into a very complicated procedure medically, leaving all of us women more concerned about the next medical appointment than anything else.
