Making the cut: choosing 40 great pregnancy books

Each book listed here has been painstakingly reviewed according to three different criteria: 1) the books current reputation on the market, 2) the value of the information being provided to new and expectant parents, and 3) it's overall readability.

Some of the books are old standards (but newer editions) and some of the books were published last year and touch on topics in new ways that we believe are relevant to modern parents.

If you disagree with our selection or believe that there is a better book out there on pregnancy, please feel free to contact us at:

We welcome all comments, criticism, and advice. We'd like this to be the best top 40 listing for pregnant and new parents EVER.

mornin mama's-to-be... I had some similar feelings and questions. I realized I was pregnant around 5 weeks and never really had any sickness. I was extremely tired all the time and my boobs were sore. I was eating like a starved pig and no matter what I ate I never gained an ounce. For the most part that all went away by 9 weeks and now I really dont feel pregnant at all. I was concerned like many of you so I asked my doctor, he said that everything is perfect and the reason for all those symptoms going away all at once is that the placenta takes over most of the work from this point on. That means... we get to feel better now!! We are all close to the second trimester which is a celebration point... So if your not feeling like crap right now... thank your lucky stars and throw yourself an ice-cream party! Congrats to all of you!! Always remember there are tons of places online you can talk to other mama's and if you dont like the advice your getting there, or feel that you still have questions CALL YOUR DOCTOR!! thats what they are there for. Most doctors offices have a 24/7 phone you can reach them at so ask for that number! There are always help lines and friends if you are still freaking out... The best thing for you and your baby is to stay calm, relax, and be happy. Just cause you dont feel right doesnt mean there is anything wrong. And dont stress about your feelings it only makes you feel worse.

hope that helps someone... i know its kinda long-winded.
again, take care of all of you and congrats!!

To bibi (who no longer needs this advice!): Re: the ill-fitting pre-pregnancy pants but not big enough to fit into maternity pants... There is a product that you can buy called by various names, one being the "Bella Band". It is a band of fabric that goes over the waistband of your "skinny" pants, hiding that they are unbuttoned or even unzipped. It looks just like a layered tee or top underneath your regular top. They come in a few basic colors and sizes. Just search online for "Maternity Clothing" or "Bella Band". Best of luck!

Oh my! I really have a lot of adjusting to do. My husband and I had only known each other 3 weeks, feel fast and hard. Were married on the 4th week and by the 8th week I was pregnant. My first marriage, my first baby, talk about stress! I know I am supposed to be relaxing, thinking of the baby and all but I am so overwhelmed I wonder if I made a horrible mistake. Did any of you ever feel this way? One minute I am so happy and thrilled the next I am completely stressed and concerned about the marriage, the baby and if we took on too much too soon. Sometimes I thinkg it is my hormones, the rest of the time I just think I am loosing it. I am really glad to be having a baby! I just hope this roller coaster does not affect my babies mental health.

I'm 47 and having a "surprise" baby, I don't believe in abortion and I am not unhappy having another child but my kids are 23 and 26 respectively and I am having a hard time adjusting. And God how I forgot how much being morning sick sucks! I've actually lost a few pounds since I got pregnant but I'm sure I will start gaining now that I'm at the 11 week mark, hopefully the morning sickness will decrease!
