Making the cut: choosing 40 great pregnancy books

Each book listed here has been painstakingly reviewed according to three different criteria: 1) the books current reputation on the market, 2) the value of the information being provided to new and expectant parents, and 3) it's overall readability.

Some of the books are old standards (but newer editions) and some of the books were published last year and touch on topics in new ways that we believe are relevant to modern parents.

If you disagree with our selection or believe that there is a better book out there on pregnancy, please feel free to contact us at:

We welcome all comments, criticism, and advice. We'd like this to be the best top 40 listing for pregnant and new parents EVER.

I have read the book, listened to the relaxation CD's, and taken 5 classes with a licenced Hypnobirthing instructor. I'm 19 and having a homebirth/hypnobirthing with a midwife who also knows a ton about the hypnobirthing. I started the classes and everything at 35 weeks, cutting it close, but the confidence, and hypnobirthing explaination of the body/mind has made a HUGE HUGE difference. Before, I was still pretty scared and had a pretty distorted view on bithing. I had heard some horror stories even with my own birth and thought that's how mine was supposed to be, too. I knew I wanted to go all natural but without the hypnobirthing practice this could have all been a big scary mess. I won't let my first childbirth to be some traumatic and crazy screaming scene from out of a movie. I want it to be gentle and not forced but just the way that nature meant for our bodies to actually work!! I use the beathing techniques during practice surges and also to fall asleep which i wasn't getting enough of at all, and for just the every day stresses of life.
