Making the cut: choosing 40 great pregnancy books

Each book listed here has been painstakingly reviewed according to three different criteria: 1) the books current reputation on the market, 2) the value of the information being provided to new and expectant parents, and 3) it's overall readability.

Some of the books are old standards (but newer editions) and some of the books were published last year and touch on topics in new ways that we believe are relevant to modern parents.

If you disagree with our selection or believe that there is a better book out there on pregnancy, please feel free to contact us at:

We welcome all comments, criticism, and advice. We'd like this to be the best top 40 listing for pregnant and new parents EVER.

I laughed so hard I cried at one point. It's also *very* comforting to know I'm not the only one who eats a box of brownies a day and worries about pooping during birth. I mean, really, *why* do people not talk about this? My own Mom didn't even know it happens.

it's so funny it sounds made up to me. My pregnancy has been nothing like hers -it has been real pleasant and uneventful with the exception of a growing belly and shrinking bladder - so I cannot relate to 90%. But I couldn't put it down because it's entertaining.

I LOVED this book! It was the first one I read, and the subsequent books on pregnancy that I've been flipping through have not even come close.
Being pregnant is terrifying for me since it was unexpected and supposedly impossible. My husband and I both felt that this book not only was an easy read and informative, but the humor made me laugh when I was all tears. It brought a sense of "I can do this too" to me and I am really looking forward to reading her other books, I already went out and bought Baby Laughs. I can't wait to read it :)

I loved this book! I read it for my first pregnancy and read it again for this one. When I am feeling blue, I will pick it up and read it again. I loved how blunt she was about everything and it made me smile and know that I am not the only one going through drastic changes.

This booked rocked my freakin socks off!!! It was just what I needed to stop feeling so crappy about myself and all the gross stuff that happens to your body while you're pregnant. It was just great to know that someone else went through all the same stuff, had the guts to say it out loud, and came through it alive. I laughed so hard while reading it that I almost stopped letting myself read in public for fear that I might actually pee my pants (you all know about the bladder control thing I'm sure.) Anyway, it's the best book i've read since being pregnant and I HIGHLY recommend it!

I'm not the biggest reader, but i just couldn't put this book down. Jenny wrote a book about how we all REALLY feel, she's just the 1st to put it in writing. It's good even if you're not pregnant. My mom wants a copy for herself.

I thought the book was candid and funny, however her view on sex during pregnancy I felt were very misleading and way beyond unhelpfull. It's a good book to read if you want a laugh, but not if you want real information about your pregnancy.

I started reading one of the chapters in Target, and almost peed my pants laughing! I ran over to show it to my husband and we bought it. I read it in one day. I definitley recommend this book to anyone pregnant. Someone saw me reading it and they bought me "Baby Laughs" which is Jenny McCarthy's follow up book. I think its fantastic! ;)

I read this book and immediately bought BABY LAUGHS. It is an incredibly light read, but makes you feel so much better that a beautiful, superhuman Hollywood star goes through the same embarrassing stuff as the rest of us. She'll make you giggle.

I loved this book. It was really fun reading and not clinical like so many books out there. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day and a half! She reminds me to keep my sence of humor through the changes in my body and hormones.

I loved this book!! It was perfect for me because everything else I read just terrified me or made me feel like I had nothing to look forward to but the hard, cold and frustrating symptoms that pregnancy COULD bring you, except they made it sound like I WOULD get them all, and so far, I've had a great pregnancy.

Jenny McCarthy is open, honest and hilarious in this book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading and ended up reading the entire thing in a 2-hour sitting. I recommend it to anyone as a lighter, upbeat, not-so-technically-scarey pregnancy book to read. In fact, I mailed my copy to my sister-in-law who is just 7 weeks behind me with her second child.

Read it - you'll be glad you did!!
